Have you circumcised your disco 1 bumper?

Is it possible to change my vote ? Just cut mine

I unbolted the bottom, used a hacksaw for right and left ends, and ...ahem... I kicked the center part after realizing the screws were unusable
 
Mine was off when it arrived here on the back of a trailer....I did have the part with the number plate on, held on with some cable ties and it looked quite good...my bumper is bent and the nearside wing has had a ding too so the end caps don't fit too well and look a bit ****e if I'm honest....it's back on now but as I don't intend any off road use .....I'm not sure what to do now..... decisions decisions....hacksaw...grinder...Dremel..or leave it....
 
FFS - what the hell are you doing! Don't you value the original aesthetic qualities of the Disco 1 front bumper? :(

I'll need to change my vote as i did mine this morning!
All of the 7 nuts holding the middle part on came off easily and i cut the corner pieces using my dremel and a cutting disc.

Looks a lot better now!!!

Just need to splash out on a steering guard now :)

I've wanted to do this for farkin ages, but can't be sure it's worth it.

When I got my disco it was one of the smartest examples on offer, couldn't fault it, 98 300tdi XS. Since I've had it, with my occasional greenlaning, and using it like a landrover should be used (constantly muddy etc.) it's beginning to fall into decline, so might just bite the bullet, and do it. I've got a sump guard to go on aswell which came off an old disco from the breakers yard, but might have to fashion some mounting brackets for it.

Looks more aggressive but obviously has a practical purpose, just not entirely convinced I'd be doing it for anything other than the aesthetics. lol
 
Makes a big difference at Pay 'n Play, not so much on green lanes .. unless the lanes are deeply rutted ..

Well I have one cut down bumper if anyone wants to collect free to a good home?

one of the first mods i did was to do away with the bull bars ( stupidly heavy ) then removed the centre valance by taking the bumper off and cut the corners off with a grinder - also removed the plastic piece the number plate is mounted on as this still hinders clearence a little - been off roading loads & the steering bars have coped - but i got a bit carried away last time ( did some proper extreme stuff ) & managed to crush my steering damper - which caused the steering to stick - managed to squeeze it back in to shape with a pair of water pump grips but it has since lost all its fluid.
Im restricted to below 55 mph now as it shakes like nothing ive ever known - absolutely crapped meself as it first got its judder on at 75 mph - never slowed down so quick in my life lol - nice new terrafirma damper coming soon ;)
 
I cut mine as soon as i lifted it as the wheels didnt fit! It looks good but the bumper wont take any kind of knocks, they are too thin and bend like tin foil, i ended up getting some 2x4 box section and making my own...
 
I bit the bullet and did mine today.

My bumper end caps are a bit scrappy where I cut them with an angle grinder and it melted the plastic a bit, but hey ho. It looks purposeful and doesn't show up really.

Was a bit unsure about it, and when I took the fogs off when dismantling the bumper, I found they were pretty rotten so probably worth it. I'm sure I wont miss front fogs, and plan to get some spot lights on the bumper at some stage.

Also fitted that sump guard, which by all accounts isn't a bad one. It is covered in black hammerite which cracked light a bitch when I put it on and it flaking badly but isn't exactly visable where it is on the landy.

I must admit it doesn't look as aggressive and obvious as I expected it to, since my disco is standard so a bit lower, and most I've seen this on have lifts. So my message to anyone considering this but not wanting to change the standard looks of the disco too much would be to just do it!

One question about the sump guard is this; I have the type with recovery points, and jacking points on, (don't know make as I got it from the breakers), but it does foul slightly on the bumper, meaning that the recovery points aren't on show, and the jacking points aren't accessible as they're both covered slightly by the bumper overiders. Has anyone else had this, and is there a less obvious way to remedy it, other than just hacking a chunk of the bumper out of the way???

had a play with mine today and me my mate set about the bull bars and bumper here is a before and after photo (also took side steps off.)
