Chirping sound on start up?

Hey there,

New gremlin on the P38 - On start up for the last few days I have been getting a chirping sound that get progressively louder ... however it then dies down after a while - and doesn't come up again ...

I don't think its the U Joints as it is present on start up and then isnt there when driving (it does stay on for a while when driving if I move away right away).

Any thoughts what else it could be?

Fanbelt tensioner pulley maybe. Or belt slipping due to alternator load just after start.

Nesting bird under the bonnet? Could be the water pump.

Had look around but no droppings or nest eggs (scrambled or otherwise)

If it is the Water Pump or the tensioner, is this a big job?

checked the oil and changed recently???

Checked oil today and level was fine ... it was serviced around 4 weeks ago so oil was changed then ...

does it do it everytime you start, ie when warm and start it??

i would change the oil. i would suspect the oil they have used is incorrect for the car. as the car warms up it's lubicating the engine getting rid of the cherp?
was it a main dealer or a back street garage?

Thanks! You may on to something. it is more prevalent when the engine is started from cold ... will try again tomorrow and double check.

It was serviced at the dealers ... major service including fuel pump replacement so I would have thought they should have done it right. Interestingly, the oil on the dipstick was very black when I checked today - not what I would have expected so soon after a service ...

Sorry but oil is oil. Unless he's put Trex in can't think it's that causing the chirp.

I'm an ex boot neck leave my left nut alone. But i do agree about tensioner.

Put some talc on the serpentine belt and see if that solves it for a bit.

If it does then could be belt tensioner out of alignment = washer or penny on the left back is the usual fix.

Could just be the belt? Remove and clean path to remove all dirt.

While belt is off check the tensioners bearings.

could be an alternator about to die .......
I had one with worn bearings that took a lot of energy to get it spinning, so for the first few seconds the belt slipped causing the squeal .........simple fix

easiest way to find it is have someone else start it whilst you've got the bonnet up ....... should be quite apparant where the noise is coming from.

OMG wammers, you old fart!! did you just poo poo the wrong oil thing coz i'm a girl????

there's loads of difference between oils and FYI.....i can tell when my oil needs changing and topping up,
I go cherp cherp cherpy cherp when i'm in need of lubricating!!!!

with a drink of course!!!

No nothing sexist in it. Cheap oil and dear oil is OIL. As long as it's somewhere near the correct grade. Lot of bull**** talked about all the new synthetic oils. They maybe high tec but they are not all singing and dancing as some would have you believe. Cheap oil more often is better than expensive oil less often. The dear stuffs main claim to fame is you don't have to change it as often. If you own a diesel I say that cheap oil and filter three times a year is better than expensive oil once a year.
