Just a quickie guys, anyone with a 91-97 Cherokee check you local
friendly Jeep dealer for Safety recall A05, Front Disc replacement free
of charge due to discs separating from the hub .......
They say the work will take an hour, and to book the car in 1st to see
whether you have the faulty discs or not.

Quite right. This recall is over a year old now so most vehicles
should have been done, but well worth checking if you don't know.
I don't think they change the pads unless you request this and pay the
extra. I would recommend requesting new pads when the recall is done.

Mine was done in September 2002 when the original discs on my '93
Cherokee were replaced at around 95000 miles! Imagine how alarmed I
was when I was told the discs required replacement on the next service
at just over 100000 miles (Jeep dealer in Romford). Needless to say, I
declined and had the vehicle checked by an independant Jeep specialist
who advised that the discs were perfect.

They also broke the oil pressure switch whilst changing the oil filter
and tried to charge me for a new one!

I know where the vehicle will go in future.

Right, so when can we expect to see the media condemning Jeeps for being
unreliable, dangerous hunks of junk? Not to mention the baying ****wits
in urc4x4.

The recall started in Summer 02
Pads are extra, but at £32 a set they are not bad value and are the
cheapest pads in the whole Jeep / Chrysler range.
The disc change can take as little time as 12 minutes, or over 3 hours
if the pad retaining bolts shear.

Very common for that year. The pressure switch is next to the filter
and those filters get very tight, with little room for manoeuvre.

I thought most people knew that. :)

No, before I worked in a Jeep dealership I thought they were a
reasonable quality vehicle.
I don't have that misconception now.

I thought they were reasonable up until the time I thought about buying
one. I went to have a look at a Cherokee in a local dealership. The
first thing that struck me was how incredibly cramped the driving
position was and then how damned stupid it is to have the spare in the
luggage space which was already too small to start with.

Then I noticed that on a 14k miles vehicle the trim was already in a
really poor state - much of the fake leather finish was a spray paint
over cheap plastic and the keys (for example) had worn through the paint
and down to cheap black plastic.

Run away! Run away!
