Hi all,

I am going to fit some 3mm chequered plate on my 110 (1999) wings and bonnet. I have seen a few videos and one or two suggest putting something between the plate and the bonnet. Is this something you have done or gone for riveting straight to the bonnet? I am getting mine from Rimmer Bros (unless you can recommend an alternative?)

Thanks....

I used some Tiger Seal around mine when I fitted them and It was a mistake I think. I recently had to remove the wing top plates for painting and it was a nightmare. I would like to take the bonnet plate off but that would be even worse. If I had to do it again I would fit direct

Thanks, I was thinking the same!

I fitted direct with nothing in between, my reasoning was I want water to get out if it gets underneath. I also used m6 counter sunk bolts rather than rivets so I have no issues with noise as I can do it up tight enough to not rattle etc.

Can’t help with where to get it as I got mine from an autojumble. I would recommend the thickest version possible through. Have come across some that are a little flimsy and detest the point in my opinion.

The first question is 'why ?'

Rimmers are just resellers aren't they - whose CP wingtop protectors are you considering ?
2mm or 3mm
Aerial hole or not ?
Around the wingtop air vents or (those that fit) underneath them ?
Under the bonnet or just to the edge ?
Colour (Black or bare Alluminium) ?
Rolled to the headlight shroud join or stop short ?
Rolled edge to outer wing joint ot flat ?

I fitted mine because I want to stand on the bonnet and film hyenas and lions.

I intend to fit some, as its painful trying to get large stuff on the roof rack without climbing all over the wings.

I probably wont bother with the bonnet, just the wings.

(my current wings are so dished on the top that they collect water when parked)

Mines riveted. I can't say that rattling has ever been an issue. The problem with bolts is they're steel. Rivets are aluminium.
+1. No sealant needed either.

The previous owner fitted mine and painted them black. But the paint is coming off as it doesn’t key to aluminium chequerplate without preparation.

Id like to see a web page with all those examples.

I suspect I could spend an age on Google and get the same....

....which is why I'd like to see them all in one place!

Mine were really useful on my defender. I also only had wingtops. Believe they were rivnutted with countersunk bolts which was a nice finish. Were excellent for tying down roof rack. At the rear I could just stand on tyres but some get a cute little ladder 😂.

I am considering chequer for my d1 bonnet as it’s damaged and I’d also like to shoot off of it and throw my gear on there. Not sure if it will immediately make it look too pikey though

Same here, except I painted them 🤔

Mine are painted. A good degrease, etch prime and well cured top coat of tractor enamel has don’t the job admirable with no flacking paint.
