Checking Gearbox level

Can some tell me how to check the gearbox oil level on a 1995 P38 4.6 Auto.

On the flat of course but does it have to be warmed up, luke warm, cold, run through the gears first, turn round and tap my head 3 times whilst rubbing my stomach etc etc.

If you have an automatic it should be in N and the engine cold, then start the engine and take the reading, you top up from where the dip stick is, you shouldn't need any tip up at all (it doesn’t burn like engine oil) if its low you have a leak some place, look at the brake housing (where the transfer box is) the seal leaks sometimes, you’ll have to fix it if your getting too much oil coming out from it, and you’ll have to change the shoes on it too, probably contaminated with oil

Thanks for the advice. The gearbox was straight forward but im stuck on the head tapping bit!!!

Later model RRs don't have a dipstick and are therefore only get checked when the filters are changed during service. There is a fill plug on the front of the gearbox case, when the oil overflows from this all over your driveway it's full, easy as that.
