Hello everyone, I'm wondering what is the best or easiest way of checking the level of oil in a Td5 defender gear box.
Also is it easy to top up/change. I've read that when you are changing it, you should do half then drive 500ish miles before doing the other half. Is this right.
Any advice much appreciated.

change it regulary its not doing that causes the most issues with these and other boxes , just undo filler/level plug 55t torx bit, when vehicles cold , drain is 1 1/4 or 32mm ,you need just short of 3 litres of dexron 2 or 3 or mtf94, that it the rest is rubbish just drain and refill every 10k or so with level checks monthly is best but as you can

I think the idea is that by changing half the oil at a time, it dilutes any old oil that is lingering at the bottom. So you actually get a better oil change.
As I said, I read it somewhere. I can't remember where though, or I'd post the link. I'll see if I can find it.

But if there is any contamination, then it's just going to contaminate the new stuff as well. I've heard of changing the oil, then a short time later (Your 500miles), changing it again to flush out any crap, but you can't change half the oil at a time, thats just pointless:confused::confused::confused:
