3) just buy a roof tent off ebay at the end of the season... sadly you missed out and will have to wait till next sept/oct.

look at it this way. you could spend £300 on a 2nd hand rooftent thats in good order then when you want to sell it in 5years time you will get £300 back because the 2nd hand rooftent market doesnt change! unless you trash it.

you cant go wrong if you keep the mattress indoors through the winter months and take it off when you go to pay and plays :)

am i right to say in summary of this thread that:

1: when camping drink enough to ensure that you could sleep on a frozen lake naked if required to do so therefore negating all issues of tent size/placement/comforts/view from/look of/mud/dew - but dont drink too much such that you arent able to find said frozen lake (or where ever you intended to sleep)

2: never buy a caravan
isn't that what camping's all about?

did i tell you ave gort a massive one

i prefer me caranex tent, cos with a roof rack fitted i wud always be catching stuff on it whilst laning (already got dents down both sides of me roof and deep scratches along roof and alpine windows), many times we have had to stop and lift stuff up and over Durty's roof rack abnd untie it from low branches.

we could alway fabricate one ourselves sure theres enough people with enough knowledge on here and bet we could make a dencent one fraction of what the top ones cost

I designed and built my own rack and tent 15 yrs ago , as there was nothing that was suitable at time.
The roof rack tent area had to start at B post due to aircon unit in roof, I made the rack so that it would open out over passenger side and was self supporting , Plywood floor, screwd tent down with hinged frames inside so that as it was swung over it erected the tent. When it was closed the tent was proteced by the top plywood , like in a box.
If you want to go this route pm me :D

It would be soooo much easier if you do as i do, sod the tent and kip in your landy, prob solved, no bothering try to fit poles, ropes and bloody bent pegs...

here durty are you bringing some firewood for tuesday onwards or shall we use our axes to make camp fires? plenty of deer in woods for supper.

As ever, and i serviced it all ready for you, come on you know what my landys packed with, every possible outcome hopfully catered for...
