A mate of mine changed his headgasket and he seems to think he knocked a washer into piston nunber 2 as upon finding out why it wasn't running right he found marks in the piston that look like a washer and pieces of it welded to the piston. I've offered him 100 pound for the engine and plan on taking it apart and replacing all the things needed to make it like new.

I don't think its coming with turbo or alternator but I should imagine it needs a new head and atleast 1 piston.

Was it definitely a washer, could be too thin a gasket or incorrectly skimmed head which allowed a valve to hit the piston (do the 'washer' marks match up to where the valves are?). If it was a washer in there check all the valve gear and cam followers associated with that cylinder thoroughly, if the valve hit it there would be a lot of force going back through the valve train.

Someones had their head skimmed.
Was he missing any valve lash caps? one on top of each valve stem, very small and often wander off.
New valves in that cylinder and I reckon head is good to go again, if keeping engine new piston would be a good idea.

definitely looks like a valve cap

I've paid 100 for the engine but won't have it for a couple weeks. I'll take some pics when I get it. Think it will be missing turbo and alternator but I can sort that at a later date. I want to strip the engine totally and swap things that need swapping and to mainly learn what I can from it.

Also I was there when head was removed, he had 8 valve caps and I removed them for him. All 8 and number 8 was worn through like it was just a polo...

Told him to get new caps and then do the valve clearances to 0.20mm.

I wasn't there when he removed the head this time to find this so I'm not sure.
