Disco 2 Chassis advice please

Morning,

Time for my 300TDI to go, and I'm very interested in a 2000 V8.
The advertiser states that on the last MOT there was an advisory for corrosion of rear suspension legs. The online government MOT checker says "Heavily Corroded Rear Cassis Legs.
Now because it's only an advisory at the moment is it worth looking at the car or is it a forget it ?
Also,an advisory for oil leak, but where I don't know could be serious or minor but then my car leaks oil as well.
Any possible advice anyone good give would be great. Due to health problems I'm not in a position to do much work on it myself so it'd all have to be a garage job. And as I've said I've not seen the car yet but asked for a viewing and still waiting for a reply.

Known issues with these are that the rear chassis rots from the inside out.

You will normally see the seam at the ctr of the bottom of chassis rail at the rear by the fuel tank will be blown out. Plus the inside edges of the chassis rails are known to go, but this is harder to see as the fuel tank is in the way to get a clear look.

Also worth looking at is the area behind the airbags / rear springs if you can get in there , as these are also known rot areas, just more difficult to get to.

However do make sure to check the whole chassis as it is not unknown for them to go at the front end as well.

I have seen vehicles that do not have an advisory that I would have thought should fail an MOT and others that had surface rust that have an advisory. Looking in person is the one thing I would do on any vehicle.

Thank you for your reply, I'm aware of the chassis problems on the Discovery 2's but it was the 'suspension legs' that baffled me, whether they are replaceable or part of the chassis itself.
Don't take much to baffle me I'm afraid.

Are you sure it is not the seller getting confused? What are suspension legs???

I saw the car on Saturday, the owner had power washed the underside and got it up on stands so I could have a good look at it.
The corrosion is only one hole on the NS chassis leg on the inside in an area where the mot tester could get a good swing at it with a decent ball pien hammer !
It's solid apart from the circa 2 inch hole. Just surface rust and no blow out on the joints.
So pick it up at weekend and get it welded then get it treated inside. Apart from a few trim bit and scratches
everything works as it should. He's owned the car for 17 years, Land Rover the first few months, only 100k on it and lots of bills for work carried out. Seems no expense been spared, so happy. By the way what is the best way to treat the exterior of the chassis ?

I looked for months at D2 before taking the plunge. Maybe it depends which price range you are looking at, but maybe not? But 95% D2 i looked at/ enquired about all had some kind of corrosion on the rear chassis.
One didn't, but it was rotting badly on the inner front arches instead! so take your pick.
Iff they are rotting even at 100k on the clock, then what chance do they have at 160-220k, which is what a lot of them were at that i looked at.
So all the usual variables.
How much do you want to spend?
How much time can you spend treeing up and down the country trying to find the mythical perfect D2? They all have faults as far as i could tell.
Are you specific about Spec, colour, engine choice, or are you looking for the "Best condtion"?
Realistically most people will only travel a short distance from their locality to view a used car, so that usually narrows down the search that way.

Yes, I agree. I have been looking for over a year but all I see is problems and I will travel a long way to look at a car. I have never owned a disco but there is something about the look of them that is appealing but from a purely practical aspect, they should be the last car in the world that I should buy.COL

Yes, I've wanted a D2 for some time price was an issue, no way could I afford a late D2, thankfully I'm not keen on the face lift. Distance to travel was important as well, so I was limited to what I could see. Other specs weren't that important but it had to be automatic. Suppose a more 'sensible ' car would be better but I've got arthritis and even getting in and out of one of those is difficult never mind driving one, but the choice I would have had....
The D2 I've just bought, I hope it's a good one like the 300tdi I've got now, which I bought sight unseen when we lived in France, drove it 600 miles home without a hitch. I possibly wouldn't have bought it if I'd seen it before, paint not that good but it's been a really great car, very few problems or expense so happy I bought it and I'll be little sad to see it go, which has to be soon.
The D2, well I don't do too many miles now so I bought this 2000 V8, just hope it turns out well. I'll see, but the chassis is okay, trim details which could let it down are easy to sort. Looking forward to weekend when I pick it up.
