Im trying to figure out the best way to do the timing belt on my 300 tdi. engine is currently on the engine stand ready for an overhaul. following the timing belt replacement guide i have it says the flywheel should be locked with the pin but because my engine is on the stand i have had to remove the flywheel housing and flywheel to mount the engine to the stand. anyone have any suggestions?
Changing timing belt whilst on engine stand, how should it be done?

Not done a disco one yet, but plenty of others. Just mark all the pulleys, make sure they all line up for when you put the belt back on. Simple.

just use the marks, my flywheel didnt line up to lock it, so I just used the fuel pump pin, the cam and crank have timing marks on them.

You can always check the timing after the engine is back in, there is just the small cover to remove by undoing the three bolts and the FIP pin and flywheel locking pin to do it. As long as it is fitted on the correct belt tooth the fine adjustment is simple with the engine in place.

Timing belt cover bolts are different lengths. As mentioned in another thread. Use cardboard to locate position of bolts, going from top clockwise etc.
