Hi All. I know there's been loads of discussion on this but I have looked around and tried every method I can find.... here's the story...

Battery costantly goign dead for last few years - keep charging and it's OK then dies... eventually batery gave up completely (nbot a surprise!).

So I checked all was OK by jump starting from my MGTF (amazing such a small thing will jump start such a big car in a few seconds!)... Rangie strarted first turn of the key as normal with power..

So I checked the size for the niggest capacity battery I can wedge in (I have LPG and the ECU for that takes a bit of battery tray area). Found a Yuasa 12V Silver Car Battery HSB096 in Halfrauds and got a do=iscount on it - so plumped for that one as it had higher capacity than the original and better cranking power - oh and a 5 year guarantee!

So I popped off the old battery, cleaned everything up, even the earth points. Popped new battery on and the car locked, lights flashed etc, just as it does if I charge the dead battery.

However on trying to open the doors with the fob nothing. Tried several resync methods (including the two 'super secret' dealer ones!) and still won't sync.

The weird thing is that if i use the key in the drivers lock the central locking does open all the doors. After a few tries, or if I try the key in ignition method a few times, the car jumps to 'key code lockout' and I am back to square one! Then have to wait 30 minutes (seething through each of them).

I'd say faulty lock apart from the fact it worked just fine before the battery change. I have had it before occasionally when the battery died, but usually I'd pop the key in the ignition and press a few times and voila! I am not sure if my car (1998 4.6HSE) has the passive sync or not to be honest - maybe it was just the fob taking a while, who knows!

I am tempted to disconnect the new battery and leave it over night to clear everything down, and then start again maybe?

Any help greatly appreciated. I inherited the old guy from my dad when he died so he has quite a sentimental value - otherwise he'd probably be gone by now!

If you locked the car with the fob and opened it with the key it will be in an alarmed state. You need to enter EKA code. You cannot re sync the keys when car is in alarmed state.

Massive thanks to Moz - true genius! Rangie (nikname Michael - don't blame me my Mum named him!) is running nicely again.... he certainly turns over much better with the new battery and cleaned contacts - I was going to treat him to new battery terminals but in the light of what happened today I'll leave well alone! LOL

To Moz - stood outside him after lockup and watched the red light on gear selector. Immediately I locked him the light dimmed - then after about 5 minutes (in while time a neighbour came out to check as they thought I was an undesirable trying to break in to the car!) the light went out.... not sure if I need to go out later in the wind and rain to check if it's back on again?

Coincidentally I have recently binned some wireless home phones that I had upstairs - I wonder if it was them keeping him awake and killing the battery? They were by the windows that he sits under so maybe, just maybe, he's cured!

Cured until you park near a transmitter of some sort. New RF receiver or the second FOB dodge are the only cures.

hi adam ,glad to have helped... tomorrow we will check out r f receiver !!!!!!
I agree those phones could have been interfering with it as they were hi fi !!!!
unfortunately the old r.f. recievers suffer from spurious signals ...so at least your mobile !!!!! :):):):)

kind regards mozz

The Mancunian magician strikes again:)

WiFI, wireless door bells, weather stations - just about anything wireless these days will work on same frequency as your P38 security, waking the BECM up and draining the battery - the new RF receiver rejects spurious signals - buy an upgraded RF receiver from Island 4x4 or a stealer - forget ebay or you'll end up buying an old one.

You forgot to add , burning the front door locks out as well:) I did the second fob fix, cost me less than £3.:D

One would wonder from that how you can buy a fob and receiver for £3.00 that cannot be effected by spurious signals. Yet the Land rover RF receiver is £200.00 plus and the key fob £150.00 or so. Do you tend to think they maybe slightly overpriced? :D:D:D

Yeah, all on 433MHz IIRC.

Trouble is, the RF unit price has gone through the roof. 12V remote on / off switch is less than a tenner delivered from eBay.

Good Alan. You could have brought some decent weather back with you for us lesser mortals to enjoy. :D

I did try but was stopped at security. If its any consolation the first two weeks were fantastic, the next was changeable and the last was cloudy with occasional rain. Tenerife had snow and hail the size of golf balls so I guess it wasn't so bad.:D

Feel for you it must have been hell. :D:D:D
