Hi Everyone
Today I drained and refilled the antifreeze in my car. However I drove it afterwards and after 2 miles the battery light came on, I drove home, checked it with my multi-meter and was only reading 10.98 volts, obviously it is not charging.
Have I upset something or is just coincidence? Has anybody else experienced this problem as I know the alternator is water cooled.

Thanks Lee.

Well that's a new one on me. Have never seen a water cooled alternator. But i do know they don't like having water poured on them if that helps.

Must be an L322 then. At a guess, you have an air lock which has caused the alternator to possibly overheat and shut down. Only a wild guess though.

L322s have water cooled alternators do they? You learn something new every day. I cannot think that any alternator has ever run at a constant 89 degrees or anywhere near it. Congratulations to Land Rover for designing in another built in failure point.

WOW...had never heard of the like either...but.....

one lives...and (hopefully) learns :D

A bit hard blaming Land Rover as it is a BMW unit!
Maybe BMW tried it in their F1 engine which could explain a lot!
Have Ford ever used a water cooled alternator, I think not!
It does sound a little ridiculous I have to say, what was it meant to achieve?
Maybe and only maybe, there is a case to be answered in having the alternator electronics running at a constant 88 odd degrees, with occasional excursions from 0 to over 105!

Yup Land Rover seem to be off the hook. But i have never heard of anything as bloody stupid in my life. What's wrong with air cooling it's worked fine for years. With the enclosed casing any air lock will cook it in a very short space of time. Why go to all those lengths to fix some thing that isn't broken. And that is progress?

They didnt have enough room for airflow on the bmw it was orginally designed for , I think it was close to the exhaust manifold too.

I have never seen one go wrong on a bmw, in a bmw, but I am sure the green oval will find a way to make it go wrong lol.

Are you sure you didnt spill collant all over the alt, this would cause the light to come on untill you drove it for a while to dry it out. :)

Thankyou for replies up to now,no spillages or anything, can only assume i'v been unlucky and it was a co-incidence. Expensive part though!
