L322 Centre console repair/painting

Hi all,

The centre console on my L322 is horrible so I'd like to have a go at painting it. It is currently peeling off and sticky to the touch.

Can these parts be cleaned, sanded down and spray painted? Has anyone had a go at this? I've seen this video but would like to have a go myself and spray paint the ones I have (black).

Any thoughts/guidance on this by anyone who may have given it a go, such as materials to use, etc...

I did my gear stick trim and cup holder in metalic silver from halfrauds (BMW silver I think) not an exact match but close enough for me.

Just out of curiosity, have you checked your fixer upper is mechanically and bodily sound? These vehs don't like not being lavished attention on, and if the little things haven't been looked after, itvfrequently means the important things haven't either. There are soooooo many things the L322 can relieve you of your hard earned pennies for. Make sure her foundation garments aren't grey, and grubby, before buying her lipstick ;)

Very wise words and I'm already in trouble for spending 'potential holiday money' on this, so I hope it's not that bad!

That said, I know nothing about cars so hope I did not buy a 'mutton dressed as lamb', time will tell, I'm not planning on doing anything 'expensive' until I've run it for a few miles to be sure. I'm hoping that anything serious will show itself after a few hundred miles, anything after that I guess could break/fall off just the same as any second hand car. I guess I know what I'm getting myself into and will stop if it gets too much.

Thanks for that, looks like new! What did you treat it with first? Anything special? Mine is currently horrible and sticky and anything I put on it will just peel off again, keen to understand what to do with it first or just sand, clean and spray paint.

Sorry but wrong 19yrs vehicle to buy on a wing and a prayer , and hope things will be the same as any second hand vehicle.
Before, like some have before you, thinking that I/we are all negative and p'ing on your new girl, we are quite different on this site to many other sites and marques. We love our vehicles, some despite, and some because, of their difficulties. We will however, tell you very honestly that the L322, that hasn't been loved, is a money pit. Heck, even those that have can be money pits.
I have had mine 11yrs, she is the same age as yours, she has wanted for nothing in her 19yrs but the last 'full service and check all is ok' cost me around £1400. Two weeks later the EAS developed a fault. No-one's fault, no-one missed anything, it's a 19yr old vehicle , things happen. Parts are not getting cheaper in relation to the age of vehicle. Some are less expensive than OEM , but still expensive , especially when compared to other 'cars'.
The rule of thumb for an L322 is pay whatever you pay and keep £1k- 2k aside for repairs.
Check any old bills you got with her , to see what work has been done and when. Also check her old MoTs. Make sure she is safe. An almost 3t 4x4 is not a car, and it doesn't react like a car. Be safe :)

Hi @gold rover, not sure if my post was taken the wrong way, certainly not my intention, especially as I'm new here!

I appreciated your post and understood it, in that I may be focusing my initial attention on the cosmetic side of things (which is slightly true), but I did my best due diligence before purchasing the vehicle and bought what I considered to be a decent example and checked all previous MOT's, etc... I'm also going into it understanding that it will cost money as I go along, as any second car will.

I've had 4x4's before (not a Range Rover) so understand that it is not going to perform the same as a car, I mainly used them for work going up the side of mountains to fix things. That said, I'm not familiar with the L322 but did plenty of investigation into what goes wrong on them and what to watch out for, but we never know where the next failure is going to come from on any car (new or old).

No worries, that is actually quite reassuring. It was just worrying that you might have been sold a lemon, as you said you didn't know anything about cars.

Well, I checked what I could, but it is still true I know nothing about cars! I'm wondering if I should start a Youtube channel along the lines of 'Watch this idiot who knows nothing about cars pour all his money into a Range Rover!', I'm sure many would find it amusing!

But seriously, I did and checked as much as I could, time (and money!) will tell how this one turns out for me!

I'm sure I'lll be spending plenty of time on here, that's for sure.

I just gave it a light sanding and a good clean. Make sure you're accurate with the masking tape unlike my attempt and all should be good.

My last acquisition (all i can say is it was the fast one...with a badge to match) had a seriously flaking rear console, i.e. the bit the rear passengers get to look at, after almost 700 hours I finally managed to remove the console in it's entirety... in order to remove just this little piece!.

I basically sanded the bejesus out of it, right back to the virgin plastic, then sprayed a coat of plastic prime (clear plastic pre-treatment) and rattle canned a 'near enough' wheel silver that wouldn't catch my prospective buyers eye.

The original finish is far chunkier in the metallic particle size than you'll get on any paint rack!

We're talking 1000 grit here for sanding btw.

Looked fab.
