Hi Girls & Guys new to the forum and hope somebody can help with the locking on my 2001 Freelander. The other day i came out to unlock the door but key would'nt go in the lock so i had to search the house for the key fob ( hav'nt used it much because it plays up) when i now open car with fob all doors except drivers door unlocks which means i have to lean across passenger side to open door manualy, it does,nt even unlock with cental locking button in car? hope somebody can piont me in the right direction, thanks in advance Graham.

failed lock solenoid, requires new lock assembly, approx £75 main dealer, but could be as low as £35 on ebay.

takes about 3/4 hour to change if you've never done one before.

good luck

Try this first.
Listen and establish if the central locking solenoid is actually operating on the door in question ,you will be able to hear it when you press the remote fob.
If it is it could be that this little lever shown has seized and not allowing the solenoid to mechanically couple/decouple the lock.
It's a fiddly job but you can get your hand up in between the outer door skin and the module in the photo and with copious amounts of 3 in 1 (not WD40 ) sprayed onto /around it manually manipulate it until it's free.
The module shown is a OSR unit but the front is similar .
The green attachment pegs are for the internal handle release and the lock button linkages
If you look at the tongue plate on the side you should be able to understand the orientation.
Good luck

If the key wont go in the lock then its likely the tiny dust cover inside the lock barrel has moved - this happened to mine - its an easy fix, remove the door card and disconnect the actuating arm that connects the exterior door handle to the door latch, then remove the 2 bolts that secures the handle to the door, lift the exterior handle out and this gives access to the lock barrel dust cover - it will likely fall off as you remove the handle, either fix it back in place or just leave it out, re-fit the handle and your key will work again.

Hi checked this weekend and seems the solenoid is working so will wait till i have time and strip down, thanks for advice and will post result. Graham

Just curious did the door handle slowly get harder to open before finally going into lock down on you? I am having a similar problem with my door handle getting harder and harder to open were you able to get yours working? Not sure if the 2 problems are similar or not just new to the site and looking for help as well. Good luck you if anyone can help me I will pass on the wisdom to you.

Hi I have a problem with the locking on the free lander 1td4 2001.it locks down on driver side and passenger side front but won't open with key fob I've taken door panel off and located the mecanizam to replace this part dose the hole lock have to come out and if so how do I disconnect the out side door handle pin from the in side the door and is it a simple job to do

Have a look for a Rover 75 door lock solenoid, they seem to go cheaper on ebay, i have fitted 3 now to my Freelander 1 as only 1 worked properly when i bought the car. I had no probs, exactly the same:)

Spent days reading about this on the internet trying to find some pictures so i knew what i was undertaking! The RAVE cd i couldn't find any instructions on how to remove it and the Haynes manual had sections for door cards but not the latch itself. I eventually decided to screw it and just try and fix it. Turns out it was as easy as i had first hoped. Anyway as i couldn't find one i put a blog post up on how to fix it.

Hope this helps some one !
