Hi,

What is a good CB Radio to buy, and where is the best place to get it?
I have been looking arround on the interent , but there are so many and im just confused :(.

Cheers.

Scott.

Yep the thread title confused me too Scott! ;)

My ol' III came with one & it turned out to be knackered. As I'd had a taste of it (last time I used a CB they were illegal!) I had to get another one.

I got the "Offroader" package from http://www.thunderpole.co.uk/index.htm

Yes, I bought it because it said "Offroader" & I guess I must be a bit sad as a result! That said, I did do a bit of research into the Team MC8 that comes with it & for the price they seemed pretty good. Much slimmer than the one that I had, simple & easy to use & I seem to get a pretty good range with it.

I already had a "twig" mounted in the centre of my roof, but one of theirs came with the package so I thought it would be newer/better. It was shorter certainly, but didn't give any better SWR (very slightly worse) than the ariel that I already had, so I reverted to that.

They've a good starters guide to CB on their site so that's well worth a shufty at if nothing else.

The pack turned up in good time, I ordered their cheapest SWR meter (less than a tenner) & should've ordered a patch cable to connect it, but didn't, DOH! As a result I found that my local Maplins had a fair bit of CB stuff & you can see it "in the flesh" so that might be worth a look too.

I got an additional speaker from Maplins way cheap & mounted it up on the side of the cab next to my ear. It just means that you can hear it above the noise of a Diesel III without having to have the volume so loud it scares the sh*t out of you every time anyone speaks! Plugging the external speaker into the socket on the radio cuts out it's internal speaker which I found handy too.

Hope that helps chap?

Everyone must have their own opinions, but that got me back into it with the minimum amount of fuss.............though don't be surprised when it's all set up (& apart from at or on the way to Landy events, where it really comes into it's own) all you find "on channel" is Granny Grunt trying to share knitting patterns & a load of people who thankfully "stay in more"!

Best,
Marcus..............Or if you're in the Bournemouth area looking for a copy "Jack Pike"!

Cheers for your help guys,
I will have a look, however I have just takled to my mate too, he told me that there is also a shop in farnborough who selll CB's and that are apparantly really helpfull too. So i will have to try there i think.

Cheers for your help again,

Scott.

I also bought a pair on Ebay, which turned out to be duds. Got it working sort of, however will be looking to replace it with a new one.

When you go to Farnborough, let us know the outcome, as its fairly close for me too.

Rich

Have you thought about PMRs? If you just want to chat to your buddies while out greenlaning a set of these might be a better buy. Dead cheap and a sinch to use.

Gareth

Hi,

My mate poped into the shop in Farnborough today, this is what he found:

Its only a small shop, however they have alot of kit in there, all you need for CB's.

They were really helpfull, they sell new equipment but also very good condition second hand stuff too.

The prices are also good.

However when i go over i will let you know the outcome.

Cheers,

Scott.

Here in Canada CB's are quite common (eve transport and 4x4 has one) I never spend too much on my CB as it is constantly getting vibrated (one of hte worst things for any electronic equipment) not to mention getting drowned in that river crossing. It is amazing how with a little tweaking of theantenna youcan get quite therangeout ofa $20 radio. Aslo i feel that getting huge range is kinda useless as the majority of the time that you are using it you are just calling a couple of trucks a head, and if you are pumping out too much power all they get is squack. One guy that I off road with has a really good radio, however I have to be at least a half mile from him to understand a word he says... not very useful on the trail.

ive used cobra cb radios in the past. always pleased with them.
ebay has a few on sale.
