Intermittently my under floor (alpine I think it is) cd changer wouldn't work bringing up the message "no magazine". Now it does it all the time and I cant eject the magazine at all. I have tried the credit card trick I found on here but to no gain. I am therefore thinking of swapping the unit for a new head unit with cd slot in it. I don't need a 6 disc magazine and I never use the steering wheel controls. The question is will it just take a standard DIN replacement, does it have the standard multi plug on the back and will my sound quality suffer. I am assuming I can just either leave the cd changer where it is or pull it out altogether? Its a 2000 ES model.

I have exactly the same car as you and a new head unit will fit within 5 mins.

Take out the old one, undo the std connectors, plug in the new one and off you jolly well go.

Sell the head unit, connecting cable and CD changer on Ebay. I did and it more than paid for new kit.

Well its not gone to plan. I selected an Alpine head unit as it has a blue tooth hands free option but when I went to Halfords the guy couldn't find the right keys to remove the current LR unit. It has 2 horizontal slits along the top edge but none of his many keys seemed to fit. I also noticed that the current unit is a little bigger then the standard size and the Halfords computer says you need to order a plastic trim strip for £30! I might have to bob to a dealer to get the unit removed.

Sounds like u have a Philips head unit not Alpine, if Philips its a R990 as that unit does have two horizontal slots along the top. Also I believe its a 1.5 DIN size hence the addition of a suround because your fitting a single DIN unit.

You may well be right. You tube has people removing them using those metal hangers from a filing cabinet so don't know why Mr Halfords struggled. I have also found the plastic trim bit for £8! Will have to have a fiddle myself and get it sorted.

As it the original unit and even though the cage clips have been released u will still have a devil of a job pulling the unit out, all due to wiring being stiff and set and the rubber retainer that's at the rear sticking.

So it's pull hard and wiggles :D

When it starts to move it could pop out, its easier when with units that have a cassette player as you have something to grip inside which iirc yours doesn't.

Hi Steve, once you have removed the std head unit (which is 1.5 DIN) you'll almost certainly find that the plastic trim is already in place !!!!

mine does have a cassette so should be something to get hold of! I wont order the trim then just in case. As I often find myself saying on this forum thanks for the help and advice its appreciated.

I have had a go at getting the unit out tonight after watching footage on you tube and so on. However despite finding some of the proper removal tools in the garage it doesn't seem to be unlocking the tabs at all. Might be dealers after all.
