Hi all, I'm a new member, long time visitor.
Have found landyzone very informative and very amusing at times!
After many months of searching for a Landy I have finally bought a 90 300tdi this February:).
I know this has been brought up numerous times but I'm looking to get a CB Radio. I have however no experience whatsoever with CB radio's, so I'm looking for advice really.
I have had a good look around and have found several threads here on CB's but I cant make up my mind on what I should get. Hoping to use one for future green laning and just to play around with.

I have found loads on Maplins, 4x4cb.com, Thunderpole.co.uk and even eBay for under £100. The one name that kept popping up was Midlands; are these any good? If so what models should I look out for? When it comes to channels; will I need 40 or 80?

Looking forward to hearing of you!
Thanks.

Midlands are good ( Im running an old Fidelity 2000 - size of a head unit :) ) .
Your best bet for a twig is one of theses - CB stinger antenna on eBay (end time 05-May-10 19:18:52 BST)
less chance of it getting ripped off by thick branches , even more so if you go for a gutter mount ( personally I cant stand them as you can never get a good enough Earth from them ) . Ideally your looking to mount in the centre of the landy ( Cant use Mag mounts due to the roof being ally , ( Tell that to the old owner of my landy ---- Riveted the mag mount to the roof  but it works well :) ) .
What most use just for lanning is gutter mounts but at the back of the roof so it dont get snagged up , or L brackets further down ( but P clip it so it dont take peoples eyes out if you mount it very low ) .

Hope that helped a bit :)

I am looking to fit a cb soon.
Was going to put the twig at the back. But do you need to have space around?
As I have work lights and my radio twig each side of the door.

Thanks for the replies all;

Have found the following package on 4x4cb.com: (thanks 90boy:))

Midland 98 Plus
BasicPLUS Offroader Package/Starter Package
APRIL OFFER - £66 (NORMALLY £81)

Package Deals & Starter Packs - 4x4 Packages - BasicPLUS Offroader : 4x4 - Midland 98 Plus Package Deal

This includes the the Midland 98 Plus, a Flexible "Springer" aerial and any mount kit.

You get to choose between 2 aerials:

The large version is 155cm / 61 inches long, the small version is 89cm / 34 inches.

The previous owner of my 90 had a CB installed and had the aerial mounted to the rear of the roof; so as there's already a hole there, I'll probably fit it in the same place.

I'd like to go for the larger aerial as this obviously gives you a larger range, but I already struggle getting in to carparks etc. as my landy is over 2.10m. I know the aerial is quite flexible but I dont want to keep scraping it on car park ceilings.

What sort of aerials do you guys use? Where would you mount it?

Got mine on the bull bars at the front the top is exactly the height of me truck so if it pings on an over hang I know I aint gonna make it LOL :D:D

I'm fairly sure you can get quick release connectors.

I could be wrong but I always thought the power output of the c.b. would determine yer actual range. Having a longer aerial may help slightly but I think to make much difference it would need to be very very long.
In other words to increase yer range either
a, up yer output ( Possibly Illegal ) or
b, park on top of the highest hill you can find. ;)

This is how I was hoping to connect mine up as there is a hole drilled there by the previous owner:

When you say you've attached it to your bullbar; depending on what size your aerial is ofcourse; does it ever hit your windscreen or scratch the bonnet?
I dont have a bullbar yet; could I simply drill a hole in the bumper and screw it in?

Its a TD5 not a V8 it doesn't accelerate fast enough to bend the twig over that far :D:D:D

What aerial do you use? One of my neighbours has one of the long ones I mentioned in one of my earlier posts fitted on the roof of his Range Rover Classic and it seems a bit too flexible as it moves all over the place when its a bit windy:confused:

Does anybody else have any opinions on the Midland 98 plus?
I'm thinking of getting one whilst it's on the "april offer";)

i took a chance and ordered the midland on the april offer :D it'll be here tomorrow so ill let u know how it does. as for the ariel im leaving mine on the wing but i have accidentaly ordered the huuuge ariel so i'll be swapping it for a 31" springer thing

Thanks Thainy, appreciate that:cool:
Whereabouts are you fitting it on the wing mate? Thats one place I haven't thought about...

Bought mine from 4x4cb.com

Give him a ring and he'll discuss your every need.

The one I bought has a forward facing speaker as I found it to be clearer than the downward facing one on my old rig. In a noisy landy it is definately better.
