then its ok, you will probably find they just aint as popular as they used to be, if you see a group of 2 or three wagons running in convoy they asare normally on one of the channels chattin away, you just need to find em. i see you are in east lothian, a lot of the scottish timber hauliers use the mid 30 channels

Nice one. Also found out the local quarry guys use 3, so maybe one day I will hear something. Just as well the rig was only £16 eh?

if the power markers only go up to 4 there is a problem, it should go to 30+ when you key up. i still run a 40 channel fm 27 mhz with no problems at all. on the front there is a circle with 27 AND 81 in it, this is what they call the old 40 as opposed to the new 40.

If you look at the pics of his rig you can see that he has only the 4 lights to represent signal..........as +30 was FSD on a meter I would imagine that 4 out of 4 lights equates to the same thing.

Just another observation looking at the pic of the rig in question.
The RF gain should be always turned fully clockwise to achieve maximum sensitivity. You only need to turn it down if u are sitting right next to a base station running loads of power!!

Yep, since turning the rf gain right up, I have been picking up something. White noise only mind with mostly 1 bar lit up on the power meter. Mind you, these were most in built up areas, will know later in the week once I have had a footer with t borrowed SWR meter.

Fecking ell. Turns out that the rig was kapoot. Borrowed a 'guid yin' last night and plumbed it in this morning. Nothing but chatter and profanities on a myriad of channels.:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Thanks for all the pointers though! And, despite being a tight arse, I am going to buy, yes, buy, a SWR meter.

I made an offer for it, and was told to "keep a hold of it".

Yesterday I was picking up ppl from Dundee sumthing like 35 miles away.

And the bonus today? Someone actually said "you're loud and clear bud" when I asked for a radio check. I had to have a celebratory ****. :D
