There are always gonna be different views on hings like this. We've had a fair few differences of opinion on the subject on this thread alone.

Now imagine a similar thread on a ramblers forum. You are gonna get the die hard 'ban all 4x4' types. You are also gonna have the 'I don't mnd 4x4 drivers as long as they are responsible' types.

My personal view on this subject is that nobody is right and nobody is wrong. The fact the 4x4 had it's number plates removed means he was hiding something. For all we know he could've been there burying a body. If you are an 18 stone marshal arts giant wiv a shotgun and uzi 9mm stuffed in yer back pocket you won't mind speaking to em face to face. If yer a walking chopstick you might like to get the police to do it for you.
 
Hi Ratty, has been a while mate will have to try and get on one of your next days out and catch up. True that some people are a little worried about dealing with things face to face, it's not really something that worries me i just look at it that i'll have a chat and it doesn't have to get confrontational, Something like this.

Your draw a whole lot less attention to yourself if you keep to the Byways and wont upset the anti 4x4 groups. you might even get a better hidding place if you had an ordinance survey map.

Your right, there are ramblers that are fair and happy to share the Byways, but unfortunatly they are a minority group. I'm thinking of running a poll, going to keep a sheet of A4 in my Landy and draw a line down the middle. Right hand side will be headed smiles and waves, left hand side dodgey looks and ****ty comments. Think i might need 2 sheets for the left hand side.

Well if i was an anti 4x4, the Byway i would close would be any Byway that intersected with the footpath or any Byway that gave easy access to the footpath that was being illegally driven, to prevent 4x4's entering illegally driven areas. This is a common reason for closeing lanes, but i thought you would know that.

Hey Kris Not sure about that comment mate... by far the majority of walkers I have met have been courteous and even interested in waht was going on. We treat them with respect and they return the sentiment. The Ramblers Association would have us believe that all their members want a ban on 4x4s, but that is only true because you have to sign up to this in blood and offer your firstborn son before you get a membership!

You've obviously been very lucky then! A few times round the Surrey Lanes we have been treated like ****e and we've not been tearing up the countryside and we've treated them with respect. We've been shouted at, photographed and videoed. When you've experienced behaviour like that, I'm sure you would change your stance slightly! There is good and bad everywhere......

:5brant:I sit on both sides of the fence (but I'm not a member of the Rambler's Assoc.), as I go hiking/walking with my wife, 4 kids & mutt's. To date I've not had a single problem with 4x4's as most stop and allow us passage or if I see it's a tough part my family & I move aside and let them through (the kids love seeing Landy's passing us by, and I normally chat and gain info:))

Possibly I may be more tolerant being a LR owner myself but my biggest issue's have been with other "walking rambler's" who are unwilling to move aside for my family & I (normally the 50+ age group). Even my wife has noticed that they look down their nose at us, what with their squillion pounds worth of clothes/kit that comes out for a few day's of the year.

I've bitten my tongue for year's, not this year though, quite a few visitor's have left knowing what I think of them and their arrogant attitude to their "sport/pastime" (they can diss me but not my wife/kids). Time to :5bchillpill:now :)

At least foss backed up what he said with reasons for doing what he did and why he thought other members on here were idiots, wrong, cocks whatever.

I'm not going to get drawn into this but at the same time I'm not gonna let somebody just pop their head outta nowhere and give someone some **** without giving any reason.
