Ok...

So I have just been in the loft.. (Always a bad idea) and found a few carabiners from a few years ago.

Was wondering if these would be any good for towing? As it's always a pain when having to pull people out of places to have to use a shackle as the bolt normally gets dropped by some plocker,

They are only 12kn carabiners so only rated to 1.2ton. If anyone could tell me a reason not to use them, I'm thinking I might order some 31kn ones,

If your wanting to quickly attach a tow rope then you could use a recovery strap with 2 winch hooks on.

best use for em is keeping strops and stuff together, no use whatsoever for towing, IIRC the Kn rating on climbing gear is the breaking strain, not SWL so your 31kn might be ok for towing a smart car on a flat tarmac road, but little else..
Towing should have at least have a 1.5 SWL factor so for a 2 ton landy a 3t SWL, even thats a bit low IMO.

Carabiners have three strength ratings, along the main axis with the gate closed, cross loaded (pulling across the gate) and along the main axis with the gate open. Your 12 kN rating will be the breaking load not SWL (as timtheenchanteruk said) along the main axis with the gate closed, cross loaded or gate open it'll be less than half that. Stick to shackles!

As above.

There not suitable for shock loading either.

I have a couple of steel 70kn ones for work but even i wouldn't use them for towing. Static loads only where i need to clip into something that is already taking weight.

Store the pin in the screw gate side when your feeding strops etc through fixings, ust don't screw it in too hard. Or put it in your pocket.

Haha Thanks,

Will stick to the shackles & lift strops.
