the reason these cheaper car washes are not very good is the fact that they have too much salt in them ,my son in law pointed this out to me as he used to be in car body repair as said washing up stuff has salt in it and will fetch any polish off .

only found out recently myself ..
optician warned me not to use detergent on my glasses .. as the salt would harm the lens ..

So this fred confirms car plan shampoo int good for yer car and can't be used on yer chips anorl as it also contains a orrible tasting fragrance.

autoglym is renowned for being one of the better quality car care products, however I do like;

Not as expensive and I think gives a better finish although you do need to buff it when dry

Am I right in thinking I would be betterer to use a shampoo and wax, as opposed to a shampoo only, as the wax content will help top up the collinite 476s paste wax I've applied? (476s applied by hand by rubbing on then rubbing oft when it turns to a haze)

Shampoo and wax all in one are OK for a fast clean and shine. Biggest problem that I find with them is they coat the windscreen in wax. Which then leaves a smear when you use the wipers. I personally wouldn't use one, but each to their own.

when my car does get a wash and it take ages with all the stuff on while the wifes freelander is a 10 mins jobby it gets a ordinary wash with a good washing agent like auto glym and then a wax if we are up to it and then all the other bits get shined as well .that is the best way a wash with shampoo and wax is a no no you will find out what I mean should you have rain the next day you can not see a thing.

Back again... ma hippo has been washed all over and polished. This got me thinking... I should take the opportunity to wax it now as it's polished ready for a wax. I is low on me collinite 476s paste wax so I has ordered some more as the shops dun't seem to sell it. Now the plan it to do 2 coats of wax as that's what peeps seem to think is best. Yer rub it on with a cotton sponge pad and leave it to sort of dry to a haze. I assume this just spreads the wax on, and doesn't help forum the protection. Then rub it in with a clean cotton covered sponge pad or similar. Some stays on the cotton pad and the rest I assume forms a clear layer of wax on me paint. If I understand correctly this layer of wax needs to harden?

Now me thinking is once rubbed in, the haze disappears and leaves a layer of wax on ma hippo's paint work. Once this is done should I be waiting for a day, week or whatever before I put on another layer using the same method, or can yer do it straight away? Hence if it does harden do I need to wait for this to happen before applying the 2nd layer of wax or not?

That's what I use. Cheap as chips in Morrisons. Perhaps I need to change shampoo.

It does the job of cleaning but it's one of the harsher cleaners which takes oft wax. It doesn't add/top-up the wax. Wax washes oft anyway but this stuff speeds up the process. Mine got betterer when I stopped using it and moved to autoglym shampoo instead.

I only ever do one coat of wax after wash and polish. Then use meguires ultimate spray wax in between to keep the wax topped up. Auto glym rapid wax is good too.
