Cant remove stub shaft

If you've taken the bolts and the halfshaft out (which I assume you have) just put a towel around it for protection and whack it a few times with a soft mallet

OK so I have finally got it off, but I am very confused - there seems to be no seal behind the stub? Everything was for nothing!!! I was lead to believe that was the cause of the axle leaking inside of the brakes...

If it's a drum braked rear axle then there will be a brass bush inside the stub axle and then the seal is behind that if I remember rightly

I would have thought that would have been your inner or outer hub seal rather than the stub axle seal

Yeah, gasket behind stub, if it's leaking then it's probably leaking from the oil seal inside the hub, pull out and replace. (Claw hammer pulls it out well)

Well perhaps but there is no stub seal! or a place for one - that's why I am so confused :confused::confused:

theres no stub axle seal on the rear. the front stub axles have an oil seal on the inside to stop the oil escaping from the swivel.

If its gear oil that is coming through the stub on the rear you may either have too much oil in the diff or a blocked breather. If its grease leaking it will be from the rear bearings - replace the hub seal as the guys have said

Replaced inner hub seal (well someone did for me since fooking me hand) and we went on a near 300 mile round trip today to collect trailer and no leak as yet (yes I did top back up the diff oil). The breather has been on my mind and when I get the opportunity I will blast it through with some air.

Rear stubs do have a little scoring so don't expect the seal to last that long. Will replace the stubs when it next goes. Front diff flange is next as it's tearing up seals. Timing belt needs changing too, no idea when it was last done (by last owner - if at all).

Cooling system needs a revamp too, runs a little over half way on the gauge. Need some wrap around exhaust too, gets bloody warm in the pass fottwell on a long drive.
