Cant get MOT help

Hi Dave,

Some how I think I know how you feel!! Lambers are farly robust if yours have been changed then theres a good chance they were okay. There one of those thinks which ether work or dont.

The garage which has your rangie are they a independent land rover specialist or a garage which tinkers with all vehicles?

Might be worth taking to some one who has all the correct diagnostic toys to find the fault correctley. Changing parts on a wim can get rather expensive especialy on a rangie of this generation. I think you need to be looking at the induction side of things. Airfilter, airflow meter etc. Your high emmisions could be down to bad injectors. If one wasn't sealing and was constantly drippling fuel into the cylinder then you would be getting unburnt fuel out the back. As for a blocked exhaust. Blocked with what a banana lol.

I spent yet another day building my new lump. Hopfully tomorrow the bottom part will be back in the engine bay,

Good luck with yours, let me know how you get on

Bryan

hi bryan fingers crossed on your rebuild , the garage is just a local mot testing station with a repair workshop the other mechanic who i was talking to said the lambdas might be only 2 years old but looked a little rusty??
i will mention the induction side of things to the owner of the garage tommorow and ask how he is testing various componants....happy days..............dave

****update****
the garage as told me my engine needs stripping!! with a 400.00 bill to boot
he says it is high in h/c and it must be an engine problem he says it is blowing a bit of blue smoke so even if it passes the test he might have to fail it on the visual test......what a w*nker
any ideas of what i can do ie treatments cleaning etc before i strip her down? regards dave

Hi Dave,

Sorry chap as much as I hate to say it but, I did think this would be the out come. I mean if you want to keep your vehicle and am not looking to part with it in the near future then rebuilbing the engine is the way to go. If you are going to do this I would take it to some one how knows what there doing. Unless you are going to take on the job yourself.

If your not planing to keep it and want to get a MOT and part company you can try a gas treatment, but be prepaired it will clean out the internals of the engine and you may get the rings to seal up but there is a good chance the flush will clean the cylinders and the rings wont seal, which will make things worse. thats what happened to mine.

When I purchesed mine rebuilding the engine was not planed but I am pleased I am doing the work. On two points I will end up with a A1 engine and I can trust my workmenship.

But be prepaired it will not be cheap. Even with me doing all the labour my engine has cost me around the 2k mark in parts. I did have the block re-machined and top hat linners fitted which was were half the cash went. That way it put to bed the coolent issues which these engines suffer with especialy on the 4.6 unit. You may be lucky you may be able to hone and ring it but you wont know until you get the heads of and inspect the bores for wear.

This is not good enough reson to strip down the engine, please post the actual emission test results, there are several things that can be checked before deciding to strip the engine. Is the smoke really blue ? Are the breather hoses clear ? Are the coilpacks/leads and plugs Ok ? Has the engine Ecu had its adaptions reset in the last 20000 miles ?

hi eightinavee i will post the results tonight when i finish work, the ecu has not been reset, there is a little smoke if you boot it high revs
but certainly not at normal driving i might take the inlet chamber off and give it a good clean, i have noticed the 2 cooler pipes near the intake are dissconnected and their is some pipe missing of the cruise control unit actuater/diaphram it is blowing at a little t junction there regards dave

results from emmision test although they are a lot nearer to pass now
fast idle test....... fail
engine speed .....not checked
co level......2.51......fail
hc level......170.0 ppm ....pass
lambda...... 0.94 ......fail

second fast idle test
engine speed ..not checked
co level......2.19....fail
hc level....176ppm.....pass
lambda....0.95......pass

natural idle test
engine speed ..not checked
co level.....0.34 pass

overall result exhaust emmissions test......fail

regards dave

You have an overfuelling issue that needs proper diagnosis, with a Co reading that high the engine is running way too rich, probably as a result of the oxygen sensors being unable to switch lean. You need to get the car properly diagnosed.Where are you ?

Very unlikely, usually high fuel pressure, failed injectors or a misfire - caused by ignition failure.Someone must be able to help you with this,I'm too far away ! A couple of hours with the right kit and an interested tech should sort this.Gems Ecu's rarely fail, its usually a sensor or breather issue - the V8's give very low emissions when working properly.

thanks eight can you alter the fuel pressure? i am going to take all the inlet side off and give it a good clean , one thing i have noticed is that one of the injectors moves very easily ie you can turn it around with little resistance where all the others dont move? it does not seem to be leaking but it cant be a good seal , should it have the coolant hoses going to the throttle body? as mine as been dissconnected and there is some air escaping from the dissconected cruise actuater? could it be sucking air in? thanks again dave
ps hows it going bryan have you got your heads on yet?

hi all,

Thought I would give you an update on my engine. Well after 4 day building and installing it she runs!!!!.

The initial starting was a bit of a head scratcher as she refussed to fire. But a simple bit of thinking and broom. turned out to be the fual cut of switch had been activated so once reset we were in business.

Why is it that you always end up with a few bolts left over when rebuilding something which you took apart? answers on a postcard!

What can I say its been a lot of graft and expense to get it done but I am so pleased with the results. I know have a Rangie that not only looks A1 but go's as well as it looks. Well it will do once everything has beded in as its a bit tight at the mo. So need to be light footed for the next 800/1000 miles to give it a chance.

MOT booked for 8:30 Friday. If she goes down on emmissions I will not be impressed.

Will let you know how I get on.

Dave, have you had much luck with yours?

Bryan

hi bryan thats great news really pleased for you , it should fly through the mot i have taken the inlet off and it is all gunked up so i am giving it a good clean, there was also an air pipe off at the right rear on the trumpet body , a small diameter pipe but it must have been unmetered all the same do you know what this is for? i will get there i am sure regards dave

You just found your emissions problem, that little pipe is the vac pipe to the fuel pressure regulator - stick it back on and you may find it will run properly.

cheers eight i hope so, i have put everything back all nice and clean, started it up and i have a bad misfire , i pulled the injector connectors off one by one and it turned out to be no 8 cylinder that is down i will have to see why tomoz as its to dark now the plug leads on ok so i will have to see if it is sparking , it has been like this since i picked it up from the mot station , i thought it was low on fuel but not the case happy days.....................dave

hi dave,

regarding your misfire. Belive it or not what is happening to yours is the same as mine. you will propaply find that no 8 plug is completly oiled up. If you slip it out and clean it but it back in and run her up see what happens. Just out of interest if you take yours to 2000 - 2500 revs do you get any smoke out the back.

its like dayshavo.

On the other hand my rangie flow through her MOT especially on emmisions. just done 100 mile round trip today and my mpg trip says im getting 19 mpg from her. I know im running it in so not driving it at high revs but what a change.

Let me know how you get on.

Bryan

hi bryan i have cured the misfire, it was the plugs they were bosh (what the garage put in) changed them to ngk and everything runs sweet now the temp sensor wire was earthing on the block too.
the plugs are not oiled up and i get a little smoke at 2500 revs not bad at all the mpg as shot up from 12mpg to 18 mpg!! more than it has ever been since in my ownership, so i am going to get a retest tommorow
glad yours sailed through the mot mate, you can relax a little now , it should give you many happy miles now regards dave

hi all a quick update the car as not gone back in for its mot yet as i have a coil down does any body have a single one for sale?
it is intermittant and was very hard to diagnose but at last i seem to have found most of my troubles, regards dave

**update**
hi guys i replaced the coil as the other had a intermittant misfire
took it back for the retest...................... fail on emmissions

readings for anybody interested (still!)
hc..... 76 limit 200 ppm
co...... 0.48 limit 0.20
lambda ...... 101 limit 97 .. 103

so i am very close now, they now say change the cats and it will fly through,
i took it to a guy who has worked for LR and he noticed a slight rasping noise from the left bank exhaust manifold (steering side) and said that could be the problem as it is proberbley cracked,.........
so i am taking the exhaust manifold off tommorow and see if i can weld it .
i also have a large foam ram air filter on it, does anybody think i may get it down further with this removed?
also will the little allen screw.. idle control/trimmer thing on the plenum chamber do anything? when i turn it it just makes the air filter sound louder or quieter??? any last suggestions guys,, i am nearly there........
there is still a little misfire/stumbling on tickover but does sound ok when revved up?? the LR guy said it may be with the manifold leak?? regards dave
