im sure they are......jeez......why is it always an argument in here....the guy asks if you can do it? the simple answer is yes to biodiesel that is commercialy available......as for what some people call biodiesel but actually mean putting 20ltr of mazola in the tank......then thats not biodiesel.....its home brew/veg oil....and youl not find any car manufacturer condoning either at the moment.....but then....i only worked for Shell uk for 15 years and havnt aclue about fuels
who arguing ?
you might have been a petrol pump attendant for shell for all we know

Hey guys, take the plunge and do it. I've a m plate 300TDI and all last summer i ran on 100% clean / new veg oil bought at my local Costco Wholesale. Straight into the tank from the carton - MINT!!! Starting up on cold mornings if you're out early can be a bit slow, but once yer landy's warm it'll more than likely sound smoother. My mate put me a new filter on after a bit (i'm not the most mechanically mined, but gettin there) just to clear any crap. Plus, i'm led to believe that unless you use more than 2,500 Ltrs per year, you don't have to tell the "nice" man from HM customs and excise. Hope this helps. Using Vegetable oil as a diesel fuel is indeed a good start.

Is this "any" veg oil. I never buy the stuff, give me a clue, brands or what to look for on the lable...

different people find some are better than others and so depends on the price etc......but a small,and im talking a thimble full per gal of white spirit thins it down a little(breaks up the molecules)but expect to have to change fuel filter more often.......and eventually it will gum up your rings

i could write a book on the make up of diesel and vegetable oil,but in a nutshell it is that at molecular level the 'dna'if you like is different shapes....diesel is like little round balls.....veg is like longe strands....and it is these that eventually clog the fuel filter....but once into the burn zone the diesel burns more efficiently......the veg oil would ideally need preheating to above 90c to break those strands....so whereas the diesel burns as your car is set up to run on the stuff.....the veg oil leaves a smalltrace....this ends up around the rings...and if you take a look at your deep fat fryer next time you cook your chips....all that stuff gunking up your lid eventually over time builds up around the rings.......and a little clogs your fuel lines etc etc
youd be amazed at just what goes into die selwhen they make the stuff.....perfume,anti wax agents etc......in winter shell put in enough to go to -36.....or -18 in the summer months,i dont think mazola do the same

thats the billion dollar question.....i ran mine on home brew for the last two summers....no worries at all,but i dont in the winter,and my supply has all but dried up so im back to ASDA for there finest diesel.I bet there are people that have done lots of miles....years on the stuff to no detriment.....and others that have wrecked systems due to it.....and therein lays the problem with giving any kind of concrete answer.....who knows? different oils,engines,driving habits....so many variables....bosch fuel systems dont appear to mind it.....but lucas ones seem to give up on the stuff......put your hand in veg oil then in diesel with your eyes closed.....feel the same? wet and oily......yet veg oil is 20x thicker than diesel....like i say,its a black science and youll get all kinds of expert opinions...im not saying anying,people ask a question and il give my honest opinion/knowledge for them to make their own decisions....but as to if you should use it or not.....ya pays ya money,ya makes ya choice

isn't a deep fat fryer with a gooey buildup on it's lid just a sign of it's owner being less than keen to clean the thing ?
this is a very retro topic but it still annoys me that people often give advise that is likely to put people off using the stuff, there's companies who's only products are based on a misconception that you need to pre-heat SVO - pour it's straight in the tank, add a litre of petrol or 2 when it's cold and away you go
it's true lucas pump seals dint like SVO, but a new set of vitron seals costs about the same amount as you'd save by running a single full tank of SVO through your landy (before diesel returned to it's now sensible price)
i rebuilt a tired 300K 200Tdi last year, took the head off and it was manky and very sooty - i ran it on just 100 percent SVO plus a drop of petrol for another 1500 miles, when i stripped it down you'd have thought the internals had been steamed clean and chemically washed - SVO is an excellent cleansing agent, that's why you have to change the FF much more often during the first few miles of using high percentage SVO or similar fuel

over the past few years i have now done in excess of 70k miles in 200 and 300 engined landys - before that nearly 40k in a 19J
i see engines on a daily basis that have NO signs of the problems you hint at, all i ask is for some form of evidence of this "issue" other than it being your opinion
i'll will however take your word for it that SVO molecules arent round

its not my opinion.....its the opinion of articles ive read.....things you hear....people you talk too etc....thats what lifes all about,hearing other peoples views then making your own informed decision....id heard people died in the war......didnt put me off joining the army at 18....the herald of free enterprise sank...i still bought a boat...barry sheen broke his bones,i still raced a bike lol....ive read and heard that veg oil isnt very good in the long term......as i said before...i still use the stuff myself.but would i advise the chap that asked the question to use it risk free? my concience wouldnt allow me too give a straight yes without pointing OUT WHAT ID HEARD/READ FIRST....now he can make an informed choice,from listening to you i can see its possible to do star ship mileage on the stuff

i ran a 200tdi for the last 5 years on neat cooking oil the only reason i stoped it the disco fell apart around the engine i also had a 110 with a nissan 3lt that ran on 100% cooking oil both without any main problems i would some times add normal diesel when the temp droped below about -5 this went to Holland and is still going strong

Hi, sorry to jump in. Please can you expand on this it would be really useful to know exactly what you were doing. You are one of the first examples I have seen anywhere of someone having a real problem (not "I read, I heard, I think, a dealer/friend/village idiot said"). I have a load of waste veg oil settling at the moment to use for the first time, so I am really interested in the answers
So lots questions:
- What if any conversion did you do on the vehicle?
- What oil were you using (straight or waste, rapeseed, soy or what else)?
- How did you prepare the oil eg filter/ remove water)?
- Did the oil you used have additives (eg anti-foaming agents, usually E900)?
- Did you run 100% or did you add anything,if so what proportion?
- Did you run veg all the time, or did you sometimes run straight diesel?
- What did you do on fuel filters?
- What mileage did you do on the veg in total?
- What is the nature of your driving - eg lots of short runs not up up to temperature, or long motorway runs?
- What was the state of the vehicle when you started (any existing problems/ how many miles on it)?
- Was there any indication that there was a problem before it happened/ how did the problem appear?
- Can we see some photos?
- Has the acid in the oil attacked any of the surfaces in the engine?
Loads of questions I know, but any info would be much appreciated.
