TD4 - intermittently the ignition key won't turn. Read up all threads and tried most things now. What I want to do is remove the lock barrel only - just the bit the key goes into to see what is happening. This fault occurs only once a month (ish) but when it does it is 10 mins of fiddling to get it to turn.

I am hoping someone has removed just the lock barrel and the 'wards' so that I can free them up and / or repair the barrel. Can't find anything in RAVE - may buy a second hand unit to work out how to do it then sort the car - I want to keep the same key and don't want to touch the immob if I can get away with it ! Thanks

Thanks, have tried all the cleaning and graphite lube I can and it still locks 'dead' on occasion. How do you remove the lock barrel? I am thinking a thin brass 'ward' has worn and in certain key direction and at certain times the lock is jamming due to the fact that the key has not aligned the worn lock components. I would rather take the barrel out and inspect it. Have read about taking whole assembly off the column, is this necessary??

On the F1 TD4, I think you're better off changing the whole lock, which means tapping the shear bolts around with a small chisel or screwdriver ...

Mine has been refusing to turn occasionally too. I'm going to try a blast of WD40 or gun oil to see if that fixes the problem. Otherwise the lock will need removing for a bit of fettling.

i never managed to work out how to change the inner lock part, so changed the lock assembly. Hacksaw a groove in the bolts, knock the first bolt round with a punch, when loose use the screwdriver to remove them. Doesn't take long, i might have a spare key/lock, i will have a look tomorrow

Thanks for info. If you have an old one, but will need key too, I could work out how to remove the barrel and then post the answer if you wish - or you can !!!
Happy to pay postage and a beer if you can send it over. PM if you can help.
