Hi, i am a new member and hope i am doing this right, i suspect and hope someone will be able to help me if i am able to ask the right question; 40 miles from home in a remote location my P38 1995 RR dse manual turned over but wouldn't start, after leaving it for an hour it started but i had to return home without allowing the throttle to close or it would stop. Daylight revealed air in the pipe between filter and FIP and in the absence of any fault message at the clocks i replaced the in tank pump, fuel filter and bleed off pipes, checked fuses and relays. With ignition on 12v at solenoid in top of FIP, new in tank pump buzzing, and no air in pipe it still doesn't start without "easy start "and then is reluctant to tick over whilst cold and stops completely when warm unless i wedge the throttle open when its sounds and runs great, there is no black or white smoke just the sweet smell of easy start, there continues to be no messages but it stops upon releasing the throttle. Casual enquiries at at the nearest land rover independent drew the less than helpful question am i insured and do i have a gallon of petrol? (they don't like the p38) Main dealer which i would like to avoid is some 45miles away and my RR sits like a dead Leviathan, any and all suggestions (which don't involve an insurance claim) would be greatly received, thanks, Steve.

Get the fault codes read otherwise you are just guessing

Very big thanks for taking the time to read and share your thoughts,.... i guess if it didn't involve travelling many miles for a suitable trailer and then similar distance to find the equipment/expertise required i would have have done as you suggest...i suspect like many who read the post here i was hoping to avoid great inconvenience/expense of the main dealer and instead draw on the experience of fellow members in the hope that i had overlooked something blindingly obvious or that discussion might produce a solution.

I should also have mentioned that i am located in the north east corner of Scotland, Aberdeen being the nearest city with a main dealer, that's a bit of a hike from my RR! But when all else fails iam sure i will end up following your advise and probably thinking i should have done so sooner, many thanks.

As above, you need to get the fault read.

Its likely that you have a sensor problem, possibly the no.4 injector but it could be the crank sensor. Also the Airflow meter could be dodgy. The crank and injector sensors can go on intermittent fault.

If the EDC is not/mis detecting revs at tickover it won't inject the any/appropriate amount of fuel. Equally if it is not detecting airflow it will not match it with fuel. My guess is that the easy start is getting it going past the idle and its picking up enough revs to keep going.

Buy yourself a Faultmate from BlackBox and read the faults yourself:D

Hi Eaststeve,

Give Colin a call at Greenbank 4X4 on 01224 875999. He'll come to you with his testbook and diagnose the problem, then fix it at a fraction of the cost of Town & County.

Tell him Sam Murray sent you. I've referred so many people to him, he's BOUND to give me a discount one of these days!!!

Thanks to all for the ongoing interest and suggestions,....".Faultmate " given the age of the RR , not sure that such an expense represents a good investment, especially as said item is not transferable, will of course have a good ferret in the Christmas stocking but its such an expensive item that iam not optimistic.
SpudH,... iam liking the sound of your explanation, i think my RR(95) is pre mass air meter but i think the problems are probably on the fuel side and when the snow recedes will hope to progress things.
TAKdriver,.. very decent of you to offer assistance and were it possible i would be happy to work to your convenience, though i think i will still be some distance away from deeside; near Banff not far from the coast, will keep you up to speed with any developments as we enter the new year.

Will be contacting Greenbank 4x4 at the helpful suggestion of greioch as this may solve the problem and get me out in the snow, can't wait to find out what the problem was and will of course keep you posted.

Sorry for the delay in update, but heavy snow was something of an inconvenience: Colin at Greenbank 4x4 made helpful suggestions, but he really needed to have the vehicle in front of him (some 50 miles away), due extreme weather wouldnt you know recovery trucks and trailers never busier.
After reading many posts here it seemed a security relearn might work, purchased BeCM Sync Mate but no effect, managed to find a local car retailer with Autologic which to my surprise revealed "no faults", considered opinion gleaned through chattering teeth and frozen fingers was the likely-hood of a mechanical fault, probably with the FIP.
It just so happens that i had recently picked up( with the intention of having a play) a faulty FIP (ebay) and as "the fault" was present only when the pump was hot it occurred to me that i could fit it, and if it starts/ runs it would confirm my pump was at fault, labour intensive but by this time i just had to know.
Ebay pump on car starts first turn of the key and no faults as yet, will explore cost of reconditioning my pump; feeling all warm with affection for my RR I find myself considering Datatek`s suggestion of getting a Faultmate or maybe Hawkeye which seems less expensive, any using one?
