Can anyone recommend an aftermarket fuel warning light kit

So the most modern Landy I've ever had (1997 300TDI) is also the first to have no fuel warning light. Personally I can read the gauge but my other half assumed it has fuel until the light comes on...

I once fitted an aftermarket warning kit to an old Jag that just triggered a light from the gauge wiring, although I picked the kit up at a show so I have no idea what it was. Has anybody fitted anything similar?
 
If you fit a TD5 speedometer and gauges this will give you what you want.

Basically the standard fuel gauge setup on a 300TDi is rubbish. If you fit a TD5 speedometer it has an input for the sender unit from the fuel tank. It then outputs to the fuel gauge and fuel low light. It has a damper effect so that the gauge reads a correct value and the fuel light comes on at 1 gallon (so far as I am aware). You also get the advantage of a speedometer that is accurate and doesn't bounce. It's a simple matter to fit and you will need a genuine TD5 speedometer transducer too (the aftermarket ones are rubbish).

Post a photo of your dash , I've not seen a dash before without the fuel light (remembering it's in the set of lights for side lights, oil temp, brake fluid etc and not on the speedo)
 
Aye gse1986, I will when I get back from the weekend away but it's definitely not there, I miss the familiar orange glow that I'm used to in the V8! Not uncommon in 300TDIs I don't think, looking round the forum it seems I'm not alone - although why they didn't bother fitting one is beyond me.

TD5 gauges sound like a nice solution cowasaki, do you need to alter any wiring or run anything from the tank sender or gearbox etc?
 
You can either just fit the TD5 speedo and fuel gauge in which case it is relatively simple:

Disconnect the speedo drive cable from the transfer box and screw in the transducer into the same location.
Connect three wires from the transducer up to the back of the clocks which are ground, ign live and sense.
Replace both the speedo and fuel gauge.
Take ground, permanent live, ign live, sense, fuel sender output to the new speedo plus two extra wires which we will call fuel gauge out and low fuel light out.
Take the fuel gauge output from the speedo together with ign live and ground to the fuel gauge.
Take the low fuel output from the speedo and cut the wire going to the low fuel warning light then connect them together.

Or the entire binnacle which involves the above plus connecting all the warning lights and temp gauge. There are several threads on the matter including, if I remember rightly, one I did. It's not particularly difficult and the results are worth it as the speedo is more accurate and doesn't wave about plus the fuel gauge needle stays firm and doesn't go up and down every time you go round a corner. The low fuel light is calculated from the fuel level by electronics in the speedo so that now works whether you have a sender that has a low fuel output or not.

Oh and it you do fit them you will need:

TD5 speedo
TD5 fuel gauge
2 x connectors for the speedometer
Connector for the transducer
Connector for the fuel gauge
Transducer for TD5 (genuine)
3m black wire
3m red wire
3m another colour wire

No it will not fit and even if it does I doubt it will give the functionality of the TD5 one. If you can get the TD5 binnacle complete with all the clocks and warning lights plus the loom then it is easier than making the loom yourself although you will need to modify it a little bit.
 
Spare can of fuel in the back is cheaper, 300 self primes...
Wont take too many instances of fuel can usage to remember theres no light :D
 
There is one on eBay for £75 then you need the connectors and transducer. Effectively about £125 then the td5 gauge if it's needed. I don't actually know if the gauge is required as I changed the gauge and speedo at the same time. They do come up cheaper, I bought one for £20 and the entire binnacle with speedo, fuel gauge, temp gauge, clock and warning lights for £60.
 
Think I'll come back to the TD5 option as plan B - I'm going to have a go at the Spyda kit and see if it really is just a couple of blobs of solder or if I set fire to the fuel gauge in the process. I'll report back here once I'm done...
