Can anyone recommend a really good engine remap box for the TD4?

Hi everyone, I have a Landrover Freelander 2002 2.0L 3door TD4.
I have changed:
K&N Air filter
Crank case filter fitted with BWM mod

Next job will be cleaning out the Intake manifold and replace the EGR with a blank modification and some high-quality silicone hoses.

So the next thing on the list will be a chip box for the engine re-map? Can anyone recommend one? -

I have seen some boxes for as little as £55 on eBay and another one for around £98, another one for around £300 and another one around £400 so I am mightly confused!

thanks,
Leo

The general consensus on here is the synergy 2A or ron box as it used to be called.
Makes a huge difference, 10 settings to mess about with.
Mine goes like a train when it's fitted. Driving O'natural at the moment as ive had some issues to sort out.

I didn't get on so well with the RoverRon box - which may not be a problem with his tuning box to be honest - probably more to do with the MAF going U/S. But I no longer use it. My "Td4" is actually a ZTT CDTi (same M47R engine). The Rover guys with a T4 can remap the engine to a 160PS specification. I haven't done the RR to see whether this is a genuine output, but for sure, the car runs brilliantly on it. And no external box to worry about. :)

It's worth noting, a tuning box, such as a Ronbox/Synergy do something different to a remap. It's not the same thing. Both can be worthwhile and complimentary however. But research first.

I have had a couple like the ron box I say like and all they seam to do is allow more fuel to go through which in my eyes is not what you want really if you are going for more performance then have a proper job done like re chipping but before all that try using V power from shell it has done wonders for my car.
hope this helps

Can T4 map the FL1 TD4 to 160PS? The FL1 TD4 uses a completely different VNT turbo compared to the Rover TD4 unit running a standard waste gate turbo. This would likely affect the way boost is controlled, which standard mapping wouldn't control correctly.
Nice if it was plug and play though.

This makes sense except a proper remap is very expensive so most of us will be using a Ron box or similar. It may not be as good but still better than nothing.
If the OP is interested in electronics, Joe_H has a thread going with a home made MAF amplifier which will do some of what a Ron box will do.

thanks for all the advice guys. I always use Shell VPower diesel - I wouldn't have it any other way. :) I think then i'll see how she runs after blanking off the EGR first (better I hope) :)

I'd be surprised if you notice any difference from blanking the EGR alone. I didn't but maybe your more sensitive than me. Maybe if the inlet manifold is badly blocked then the combo of cleaning it out and EGR bypass might make a difference. Other things like new vac and turbo hoses may help too.

I believe it can - but you make a good point regarding the different specification of the turbocharger. This is likely to render the Rover 75 map if not useless then sub-optimal. :(

My thoughts are that the 160PS mapping might not even support the electronic controls of the FL VNT. The nozzles are vacuum controlled under the command of the ECU. If the ECU doesn't support this, no nozzle control will take place. Which obviously will be less than ideal for the FL1. It would be possible to fit the standard type pressure actuated ZT turbo I guess, which might be a benefit to those after all out power. If the VNT turbo is kept, you would need to use the services of a TD mapping facility.

i have a bluespark multi map box on mine and the difference it made is great , it pulls like a train and tows a 1500kg caravan as if its not there, it pulls from a lot lower down the rev range aswell so i dont have to change gear to much on hills .

I've also got a ron box fitted and found it very good

got a switch inside that has two settings, power and economy , get around 42mpg on a run

got rid of the flat spot around 50mph and pulls like a train

found a big difference when I removed it for an update , to allow u to change the settings whilst on the move

it will also compensate for a weak maf sensor

don't know the full technical settings but found it to be an excellent tuning box

The MAF compensation is good. It makes a big difference to my tired old MAF.
That reminds me, I must give my £25 Ebay MAF another go, now I've solved the misfiring issue.
+1 for the Synergy;)

re. 160PS .. google sais that's about 157 bhp ..
the ron box is estimated to give about a potential 150 bhp
( there was a power / torque graph on his older web site
( but page seems to be missing now

@leohopkins
and replace the EGR with a blank modification and some high-quality silicone hoses.
if your doing that .. consider this configuration ..
https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/intercooler-problem-mod.126484/
as that air-routing mod improves the acceleration of the air flowing over the MAF sensor
result: ( for the td4/m47r ) is quicker and stronger response from the go-pedal ..
works well even with a standard tuned td4 ..
( overall vehicle drive-ability is much improved if all the tubing .. and air-temp-sensor housing on later td4's
( are heat insulated from the engine bay temperature ..

( for the ron-box lot .. the a.i. mod takes a standard-tuned td4 up to the feel of low/med .. or maybe med/med on the synergy2a box
( except that the peak bhp feel doesn't change .. going by my road tests ..
( that air configuration .. plus a ron-box .. be like having another ron-box level-selection higher ..

also consider replacing the exhaust backbox with a straight thru design
that will improve low rpm torque .. quicker turbo response ..
( a decat would .. no doubt .. add much to that :)

blurb about the ron-box can be found here ..
http://www.tuning-diesels.co.uk
he writes about remaps .. and ron-box + remaps .. on one of his blog pages

and btw: .. he will customise a synergy box .. if he can .. free of charge except for postage
i had mine changed so it uses a particular maf-mapping across all selections

( on the standard 'synergy' .. the Pierburg maf mapping differs for
( one of the fuelling selections .. and again for 2 of the dash switch selection ..

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
re. mentioned above .. the air intake mod ..
works well even with a standard tuned td4 ..
my brief 'test' with all other mods turned 'off' ..
included 3 miles of uphill A road ..
don't know what the gradient is .. but rolling down it in 5th gear ..
the hippo maintains a speed of aprox. 50 mph
along the flat it didn't feel like i'd turned the other mods 'off'
( i.e. synergy 'n digibooster .. except that maf mapping was still 'on' )
up the 1st mile long straight incline .. was about 10 mph slower by mile's end
aprox. estimate as i had to back off due to traffic near the hill's peak
( i.e. full go pedal in 5th gear .. rolling start at 2k rpm ..
then there's a roundabout .. and an exit immediately up another similar gradient
and i know i can go round then exit and accelerate up that in 4th gear ..
( starting from about 1200 rpm .. no complaints from motor or drivetrain )
but the standard fuelling didn't allow that ..
went to exit in 4th .. engine would have none of it .. and demanded a downshift ..
I wonder how much better a Ron box or a Bluespark (approx £200) are than a multi box from TDI tuning (£80) or more to the point than Joe_H's MAF amp I linked to earlier (Approx £15).
