Camel Trophy - is there a database of all vehicles used?

Hi all

I recently went to see a Series 3 88" which I have the ability to buy, but it's a little unusual and some of the features and its age makes me wonder if it was used in a Camel Trophy event. Overall it's pretty rough and according to the MOT history it hasn't been on the road since 2009, and it needs a fair bit of money and work to make it usable again. The owner is looking for quite a lot of money for it in it's current condition but if it's a genuine Camel Trophy truck then I'd be more inclined to go for it in order to have something a little bit special. Is there any way to tell if it is a genuine one via a database of vehicles or something?

Thanks for that. Reading up on it it is very unlikely this is one for various reasons. It seems the 88" was only used one year (which would be in keeping with this Landy's age) but they were all diesels, none of the vehicles returned to the UK and it is unknown if any of them still exist. There was no UK team so I'd also presume that they would have all been LHD,
The likelihood of a rough looking RHD 88" with a 2.286 petrol engine sitting in someone's back garden about 300 meters from where I live is just too many reasons why it probably won't be.

He's just selling it as it is, as a Land Rover that's a bit rough and has been off the road for a while. It is more than a bit rough and due to it's age it's a long way off from being TAX (and later this year MOT) exempt, making it even less desirable. I did actually see it advertised a while ago and dismissed it due to price and age, but when I realised it was literally around the corner I went to see it. It's just me querying the Camel Trophy heritage on the quiet hoping that It would be a good deal, but thanks to your link I really don't think it is. As as it is, it's too much money for the time and effort (and cost of replacing bits that are missing) to make it worth it.

On a related note, I get the feeling that the sale is one that's trying to get on the band wagon of inflated priced Land Rovers. But I think that wagon has moved on and they've missed it and now they're sitting on something that's worth a lot less than they think. Apparently I'm not the first person to see it and I've offered a similar price to pretty much everyone else, but they won't accept it, which of course is up to them and is fair enough. But if 5 people have offered a similar price then maybe they should realise that they're asking too much. Fair play for wanting to get as much as possible, but eventually you have to realise that something is only worth that someone is willing to spend.

It'll either sit there for months and months or (as he said) he'll sell it to a restorer, which I'd imagine would be for a lot less than what I've offered. Ah well.

Any pictures? I really like the Camel Trophy Series vehickes. Didn't realise none came back to UK, from Zaire was it?

The link above has all the information that I have. It said that the Series 3 was only used for that one year, which was the Zaire event, and that none of them came back to the UK.
