Gents,
I've just got a 110 300 tdi. it's an ex mountain rescue vehicle and although it's 1997 and only got 36000 miles I was wondering if I should change the cam belt? As far as I can tell it has never been changed looking at the log book.
Shall I get it changed purely due to age?

I would say that you should just go ahead an replace it. Why risk it? The cost of rebuilding the engine should the belt go due to age far outweighs the cost of fitting a new belt.

 Do it, if you haven't got 100% proof it was changed in the last 5 years (which it sounds like you haven't). Cam belts also have a calendar life of about 5 / 6 years as well as the mileage limit. Also worth getting around to changing all the oils (engine / gearboxes (x2), diffs (x2)) brake fluid and coolant if you don't know its history. The latter can wait a bit but the belt (complete with roller / tensioner) should be changed pronto, especially if it is about 12 years overdue

Set a morning aside and do it. It's not a difficult job by any means. An experienced DIY-er will do it in under 2 hours but take your time with it and you should experience no problems.

Just done my 300TDi.

This was the old belt after 6-years (BP kit), so clean I almost felt like putting the cover back on and leaving be.......................

(not really).

It's a no-brainer. Did mine very recently, again not knowing the history (1985 90).When the timing cover came off it was full of shredded belt! Fitted the modified idler/tensioner so all good now.

Forgive me, is the modified tensioner and idler only available from Landrover?
Cheers,
Jim

I used Ian Whiting 4x4 near me, Horningtops, Cornwall. He's brilliant and knows the things inside out. His attention to detail is outstanding, he even wrote the mileage of the cambelt change inside and outside of the casing. Brilliant!
