Hi I'm looking at buying a 1994 defender 90 2.5tdi 170K. I've had a good look round it and it looks clean inside and out the rear cross member has just been replaced along with a new clutch timing belt and steering column. Starts first time no smoke, as far as i can see it looks a good buy.. But I heard off a few people that if i get a landy id be spending a lot of time at the garage... I really want one tho as i live in the middle of the countryside, have a dog, enjoy shooting and fishing so it would be the perfect vehicle for me.. Am i doing the right thing??

You need to vigourously check out the rest of the chassis for rust, along with the door pillars and bulkhead (they often start to go at the corner at the bottom of the windscreen. Also check floor wells (although they're not to difficult to replace)

As with all vehicles take it for a test drive and make sure it doesn't jump out of gear, there's no exceptional whine and because it's a Land Rover that the difflock and low/high drive works OK.

I'm sure others will be along to offer there advice as well.

I would finish with that you're looking to buy a 20 year old vehicle anad even if it's been maintained well, some items will now be worn.

NO.

Get a landcruiser, it will be more spacious, dry, less draughty, reliable and get you off your drive and out into the hills this winter.

You don't buy a Landrover unless you love them or you like fixing ****. :)

I love mine. :D

I do really want a landy my dad had them when i was a kid so have loved em ever since. there is surface rust on the chassis but it is still all solid apart the rear cross member which has now been replaced. my grandad has worked on a lot on landy's over the years so he's gonna help me tidy it and get it looking real smart if i get it.
