Buying Freelander2, what to look for?

God, I can’t even identify that the colours don’t match.
It's pretty obvious in this picture, that it's not fitting correctly on its front diagonal joint, and the colour is darker than the body it's lined up against.

On me phone so can't see it. A quick look under it with a torch would tell if it had had major impact or not.

I've just looked at an 07 plate SE for sale near me. It looked in good condition inside and out. However it's not been on the road for over 5 years and hasn't driven in that time. It's had the ABS modulator removed, has no battery, rusted up brakes and some sort of ECU fault and needs 4 new tyres as all are perished. When I asked how much they wanted, they said they'd rather break it than accept less than £2500.
I nearly fell over with the shock. It's not worth over £2.5K in parts, and as it is it's not worth anything like £2.5K to me either.

Some people are just dreamers. :(

If he's stripping everything like the doors etc then its surprising what they can make.

Oh I don't doubt that he'll get a good proportion of his £2.5K. However by the time he factors in labour at what, £15 per hour?, I seriously doubt it's worth as much as he thinks. For me to even consider buying it in this condition, it would need to be lass than £1K.

Hi all,
Just seen this ad but with this blurb. any thoughts on whether the diffs being done is a good thing?
'having just been through our workshop it has had a reconditioned front and rear differential fitted along with a service and any other needed repairs done.cam belt has been replaced in 2016 and it has mot til April 2020.drives very well .others in stock'

The front diff is in the gearbox, and can't imagine that it's been rebuilt, or even fail. The early rear diff was made of cheese, however those improved after 2010 IIRC.

Seems a strange way to advertise a car that.

Oh and it's too expensive for me, for what is one up from the base model.

I'm looking to find a slight older SE with slightly more miles, but at around half the price. ;)

Hi again.
If the earlier year diff was no good, can I ask why you are looking at an older model, please? Should I allow myself to look at as far back as 2007?
Also, mileage - over 100,000 isn’t a bad call then?

The early rear diff had an increased number of bearing failures. LR changed a load under warranty and helped out other owners later on with partial funding if the change was done at a main dealer. There was no cheese. They can take a lot of strain but failure can occur very early on sometimes. It was luck of the draw. Some had repeat failures. The later rear diff was stronger although there were still some failures. Again, some early on. Same for every part, but there were more than there should have been and it was noticeable due to the cost of repair. Same situation with the haldex and pump problems due to blocked filters. Lots still have the originals fitted and running ok with propper servicing. There's a lot of concern about it on the web. It's annoying when it happens but some make out it's going to happen every month. The usual reconditioners have set themselves up to offer repairs.

The latest car yer looking at is one trim level below the last one you looked at. GS is below XS. The XS has heated leather seats and the heated windscreen. They were options at eggstra £ on the GS probably. It won't have sat nav unless it was added as an option. Isn't mentioned in the add. Add is a bit strange. They pop in the advert for pickups. Looks clean. Comparing prices and spec's of others it's a bit higher prices. But if you compare to when it was new it's about 1/4 of the price with nearly 100k miles on the clock. MOT history doesn't look too bad. Some issues on the last mot but they were fixed. It will have the later rear diff and later haldex when first built.

Doesn't say if they're offering a warranty. Would be good to have one. Especially as it needed some work recently.

Because so many failed, that a vast majority will have been replaced under warranty, and those that weren't will have been replaced by the owner at the time. If I look at an 07 or 08 and the diff is noisy on the test drive, then that's a good bargaining tool for a good discount. It's not a difficult job to change, and a reconditioned diff isn't that expensive. ;)

I'd not be bothered by it. However I do all my own work, and so don't need to rely on garages for any work.

It's all depending on your personal situation. ;)

Thanks, guys.
Just been for a test drive on this;
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201910143308555

Details;
Seller wouldn’t lower price at all.
Wouldn’t let me take it on a motorway run after my initial test around the town
No warranty given
4 months MOT
Wouldn’t let me take a photo of the service history

It drove very nicely but the items above frustrated me and won’t allow myself to be forced in to a deal. He told me twice how many people had clicked on the advert over the weekend but when I asked him how many had been to see it,,£4 blamed the floods, etc.
Odd guy.

MOT history looks ok, although it's going to 4 new tyres.https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/?_ga=2.239134720.260323737.1572267511-1429608696.1566883135

Two different miles on the two images of the clock, I see.....!
Also, after deacceleration, there was a whine from in the engine bay, steering was loose and some bad rust under the wheel arch.....I guess you get what you pay for!!

If they won't let you drive it on the motorway then get them to do it while you're a passenger.

I once went to see a car having told them I wanted to drive it at motorway speeds. Got it to max 30 on a 0.3 mile test drive. I left after that.

edit: I should add that includes driving back to the dealership.
