Hi. My first post, hopefully one of many!

I have been looking for weeks and seen at least 9 RRC's under the £1200 mark. I haven't seen anything good so far, most seem to have rotten sills or rear arches...So i have upped my budget a little and things seemed to have improved, but i need some advice.

I am looking at this 3.9 94 soft dash model, its nice condition with only minor rust in the rear boot floor (i can poke my fingers through it!)

The problem with the car is that the engine doesn't seem right. It runs find and sounds great. Its converted to LPG and the owner runs it 98% of the time on GAS.

However it seems like it has one or more major oil leaks. Oil is leaking from the middle, left and right areas of the engine i think. It doesn't seem to have any oil in it??, well only half a centimeter from the bottom of the dipstick... and its very clean, light honey color...there seems to be some dark, brown putty/grit substance around the oil filler cap also.

Should I walk away or is this fixable?

I have a couple of other questions:

1. How do you check the front floor for rust?
2. how do I check the sills properly?

Thanks!

Walk away from this one it sounds like trouble, there are lots of good ones still out there, be patient and you will find a good one.

Poke about with a screwdriver under the front where the floor starts to curve upwards, you will soon know if there is rust.

Take someone with you who know's/is conversant with the vehicle when you go to view.A lot of people have suffered problems with LPG systems,so if one is fitted get the fitting certificate.Your insurance company will no doubt ask for it because it is a modified vehicle.Do be careful and from what has already been said about the vehicle I would walk away. You never mentioned anything about "service history"???????.

I got the walk away feeling too...thought I was being too picky though!

S/H wise it has full LR history up to 2003 then nothing since, some jobs have been done to get it through its MOT for the past 5 years. Mileage is just under 100k.

When checking the front foot wells for rust, do you have to pull the carpets up?

It is better to take up the carpets but not all sellers will let you do that, could be that they wish to hide something.

The sills can be seen from under the car, look at both ends for rust, also check the seat belt mounts in both rear door wheel arches fom above and underneath.

RUN AWAY!Ive just got a rrc 92 vogue se for 650 of ebay!111000 on the clock electrical everyting but not all of that works. Are you in a rush to buy?If not my advice would be to play the waiting game, it took me 3 months to gt mne but im chuffed at the mo.Engine is sound and only a small bit of rust.Does it have to be lpg?The petrol ones seem to be a bit cheaper. The soft dash is a bit nicer but not worth money, just adds desirabilty (if thats a word)

Hi tink82. I spent a long time looking for mine, saw LOADS of crap. Couple of guys wouldn't let me check under carpets so I just walked. When you get that gut feeling there's something dodgy just walk. I waited and waited, found mine off an old guy who'd had it from new and was too old to drive. FSH etc, all MOT's, garaged, only 32000 on the clock. Bit of rust but nothing major. Made him an offer bearing in mind what needed doing. I didn't have a bloody clue about cars at the time so i got an RAC check on it. Not had any trouble since. Love it. Worth the wait! Good luck mate.

I ran away from it today...watching oil drip from the engine just about finished me off!

Off to see another one tomorrow with 10 months MOT - fingers crossed :D The good thing is that there seems to be loads of cheapish RRC's around on ebay and autotader.

Goonarmy - whats your ebay add number? I will check it out.
