Buying a write off?

About an hour ago I was about to set off with my track car on a trailer to swap for a honda civic, I did a hpi check and its a cat c write off,

I've just been offered a disco 2 low miles with the face lift front end but that's also a cat c, now loving land rovers I'd be more happy with a disco than some jap crap,

Roughly how much would it de value it? It's an 02 plate with a replacement engine that's done 70k new clutch and fly wheel recently aswell,

There will be a value set by the insurance company that wrote it off, you may be able to find out what it is.

Value depends on damage, how bad is it? You can get doors/bonnets/wings pretty cheaply on fleabay, what costs the money are the front bumper and lights/radiator.

You also have to go through inspection with VOSA after it is repaired, and that means trailering it over to the test station. If they fail it, there apparently isn't a second shot at it.

We bought a 1991 Defender CSW that was a write-off after hitting a tree stump and damaging the chassis and axle. We put a new galvanised chassis under it and a used axle etc etc.

We had a bit of a faff with DVLA/VOSA who couldn't make up their mind about whether it needed inspecting after the new chassis or not, even though their own rules said it should.

Eventually we got a free inspection at Northampton and it was passed.

The V5 gets marked to say it has been the subject of a write off.

well d2 dropping in price as long as it has a good chassis you won't loose out as you are planing to keep it not sell on ? yes. If all work done(to a high standard) and have the paper work. Go for it. if it's for a quick turn around don't touch it.

bought a cat c lexus from family, knew its history, genuine low miles, nice motor.
owner was paid out £2k and kept car.
I paid £400 (family)
needed just 2 offside doors.
sourced them in correct colour,
removed damaged pair, fitted the drivers one,
used my newly purchased hydrolic body jacking equipement (portapower)
took me less than 10 minuets of work to push out the lower part of middle door post,
fitted the offside rear door, made a tad more "adjustment" with the portapower,
jobs a goodun..
replaced both door cards,
checked everything worked, made an aplication for a VOSA cat 3 test,
paid the fee and waited.
went to VOSA chelmsford, got tested (needed to be both insured and MOT`d if you drive it)
got a printed out pass certificate.
applied for my V5,
waited, waited, waited,
then got it taxed and back on the road.
happy chappy or what.

I bought a Cat c defender in the summer and I am currently rebuilding it. As I understand it, the VIC check by VOSA is only to check the identity of the vehicle, not the quality of the repairs as anything that is unsafe will be checked at the MOT.

The problem with written off vehicles is it never goes away, you think you're saving money but that saving is just passed on when you sell it, if you can sell it

Take a lot of pictures pre repair so the future buyer can see exactly what was wrong with it

If you're doing it to keep it until it's worth £200 it's not a problem

It has already been repaired, I think he's asking fir to much money, he's now said he wants cash on top of my bike engined track car,

Most people who do it themselves are in it to save themselves some money, not to sell it on. There are too many secondhand vehicles in the forecourts and ebay to try and sell a CatC repaired one.

On top of the chassis (Marsland) we had all sorts of other stuff like a secondhand front axle, radius arm etc etc. And all the little plastic clips and fittings which broke when we pulled them out of the chassis.

Rob is well pleased with it now, next job is to get some new decals printed for the second row new doors he has just fitted.

correct, but I chose to present the car in its finished state.

think there is a clause that requires presented vehicles to be free from sharp or dangerous objects, or obvious danger to road users, "if" like mine still had a current MOT..

most there were the same as mine in condition, except 1 that looked like a banger of many parts.
I never waited to see what the end result for that 1 was,
we were heading back home a happy chappies..

I told him to keep it as he wanted 1.5k on top of my car, he said it was worth a minimum of 3.5k and mine was only worth 2k it a fully one off rear wheel drive pug 205 the bike engine alone is worth around 1k, there's some dreamers around

I Vic tested my 106 after it was rear ended and repaired, at the test station there was a guy with an a3 with no glass in the drivers side and panel damage all the way down that side, I asked why he wasn't fixing and he said he just got them from salvage auctions Vic passed and sold on eBay

The market is all over the place at the moment.
An 02 TD5 is worth £2500/4000 depending on spec, miles and condition.
An insurance write off that has been well repaired IMO is worth around 30-40% less than a non write off.

As for your track car its worth what someone is willing to pay and you have been trying to sell for a while.
To be honest it would be worth more if it had a standard engine.

Have you seen the prices of 205 track cars there not much any more, and anything with bike engines in, mini's little fiats, reliant kittens to name a few have all sold for over 3k some not even finished or running

I haven't advertised it in a while, there people who have found the old adverts, I moved it into storage befor Xmas so it's not in the way anymore,

If I still have it in summer ill use it, I'm not desperate to sell it as I but a lot of time into building it.
