evening chaps!

i am looking at a td5 110 this week - 1999 on a T but with 122,000 miles on the clock - it has a fsh and comes from the environment agency - is this a sensible thing to do????????? are the miles too high and how many more miles can on of these babies do before major surgery??????

any information and advice would be gratefully recieved as this will be my first landy - incidently i am using it to tow an ifor williams trailer - usually approx two tonnes in total - is this the best model to go for as i have heard a few scare stories???!

thanks all........

scare stories about ifor williams trailers ???

i have heard scare stories about the td5 (not the friggin trailer......:p ) some people say they are too complicated (not normally a word used in the same sentance as 'land rover' i know...) electronics instead of good old fashioned simplicity...

i am a simple person  and have been told that a 200 or 300 tdi would be a far better long term towing car than a td5.......

but this seems like a good opportunity to get hold of a late landy - as long as it's not a nail.....

i have another choice - a 1991 200tdi hicap pickup - same money but with only 28,000 miles  on it - which would you go for?????????

if the mileage is genuine and the price is right, then id have the 200tdi anyday.
i dont do complicated either.

15 year old & 28k miles = average 1900 miles per year. wow!!

Personaly I'd go td5 one owner & the mileage will be genuine. The only added complication is the electronic engine management - buy an ecu off ebay for £100 and keep it in your shed make sure it's the pre 2000 unit as after this they are different.

200tdi has a cam belt td5 is chain driven.

LT77 gearbox's can be troublesome especially as in '91 there was no splash or cross drilling for the final drive output shaft, leading to the splines wearing away.

Go for a test drive - drive with no mechanical sympathy for the drive train and listen for clacks & noises, try both low & high ratio & diff lock.

:D Good point :D

D'ya know I can't think of how best to describe normal drivetrain shunt as opposed to A bar ball joint play.  clack? slap? clunk? - they're all there in abundance!

:D Go for the td5 - you'll hear if there are any issues sooner than you will with the 200tdi :p And instead of buying an engine blanket and other associated sound proofing you can spend the money on repairs that both vehicles are likely to need:D

Thanks grunt

aye you can spend money on mechanical items that may fail in the future.
or you can spend money on electronic items that will fail very soon.

go for the 200tdi.

The new type NNN ecu,s will still fit the older MSB driven td5 enignes no problem.
Althow any new/replacement ecu will need injector codes and security moblisation learnt from a dealer or someone who has the correct diagnostic tools.
These ecu,s are not a direct plug and play unit.

Thats good news - I'd been told that the new ones wouldn't work. Will the codes be retained if the unit is tored without power?

Yes the codes in your origanal ecu are stored in a serial eeprom inside the ecu.

You can keep on the shelf pre programmed for ages,What needs to be done for fitting a new ecu is the injector codes must be read from the old unit or from the top of the injector its self.

To fit a new ecu will only take 20mins with the correct tools and diagnistic tools :)

well....ended up driving a td5 with 122k on the clock, a 200tdi with 28k on the clock and a 300tdi R plate with 33k on the clock - all documented service histories, all one owner!

in the end the 300tdi drove the best, seemed tight, pulled well, high and low was ok etc - but i did get wet as it was raining a bit! - may have to get used to that by the looks of it.....!

thanks for all of the excellent advice! but i chickened out and went for one i could service myself!

maybe a td5 next time - it did pull like a train - smoked like one too!!!!!

pickin it up next week, what i need now are some toys to go on it :)
