I will probably get a million posts telling me not to buy it, which is the right thing to do, but I can't resist a bargain! :)

I've been offered a p38 98-s reg, long tax and MOT, but as the tittle says, it only goes when you put it in 1st, then drive.

Any thoughts on what it might be?

It's über cheap - £650!

Get it cheaper....

The Golden Rule:

Never ever buy a Range Rover with fault(s)unless you are prepared for and understand the potential costs, frustrations, time and relationship killing that are involved in repairing it...

Aslong as you are prepared why not!? :D

If it's a wheeler dealers car it will be nothing more than a fluid and filter change on the box. In reality it will be a FUBAR boxed

Haha, a very good golden rule!
I guess worst case is £250 of gearbox and a day of messing around!
Shame my other p38 is locked out completely otherwise I wouldn't be looking at this one :)

Chrck that gear selector cable correctly adjusted then fluid leval and see if the fluid is burnt or has particles of clucth in it.
Does jt have all the gears and lock up once you get going?

It's a common problem, it might run like that for ages as it will change normaly once on the move, can't bring the name of the part to mind but it's just a little pawl that has gone.

A common problem with all ZF 4HP22/24 boxes is the failure of the one way "sprag" clutch. Once the cams in this one way sprag clutch "flip" the unit will slip both ways resulting in the vehicle only pulling off with the shifter in position "1" not "D" and driving OK when shifted up to position 2,3 and D until you stop then you need to pull it back to "1" to start off again.

That's overpriced, unless it's a particulaly rare or late/low mileage model, a p38 with a transmission problem is worth scrap value - no more.

free wheel clutch has gone ,quite a common issue especially diesels in my experience, not too difficult to fix but a used box might be as cheap

Well I have bought it :)
