Hi all.

Recently bought my girl friend a 2001 freelander TD4.
Excellent condition and 84,000 on the clock it seem's like a good example.

The freelander is currently showing signs of the three amigos, but i haven't yet changed the loom and switch.

However this morning when leaving for work she came back into the house saying that the cabin filled up with smoke.

By the time i got out to it she had turned the car off and the smoke had started to thin out, but there was a strong burning smell still.

I checked under the bonnet but no smoke or burning smell there.

Re-started the car and no problems at all. No smoke/Burning smell at all.
Everything was running fine, bar the left hand brake light which has now gone.

After about 10 miles this mornign she called me and said the SRS light had perminantely come on.

Could these two issues be connected?

Has anyone else had a simular problem or can shed some light into this issue?

Thanks for you time.

Kristian

SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) lamp on and a burning smell from cabin...dunno much about them but could the smell/smoke have come from steering wheel? Ignitor failure on your airbag module?
Failing that it holds all the symptoms of a cable rubbing somewhere and burning something!

Cheers for your help.

Yeah it was hard to tell by the time i got there, but im pretty sure it was an electrical smell.

A bit weird that the SRS light didn't immediatey come on, but its quite a coinsidence for that to sudenly happen.

Is this something that should be able to be identified by plugging it into a diagnostic reader?

Cheers,

Kristian

A little update.

Just spoke with my girlfriend and the heater control panel in the center consol is now not lighting up.
She seems to think this was where the smoke initially started coming from?

Is there much wiring behind this part of the dash? and anything that could be linked to the SRS?

Cheers,

Kristian

Check the yellow plug and wiring under the drivers seat, this can cause the srs light to come on due to bad contacts or if it gets disturbed.

Thanks for all of your responses.

Yes it does have an aftermarket stereo fitted, but it's been in there for about a year.

Well I have managed to find out what produced the smoke:

This loom is located directly behind the ashtray/cigerette lighter section of the center console.

Any ideas what this loom could be? and why it has burnt out? ha.

Going to get an auto electrician on it later on today hopefully.

Cheers,

Kristian

It's quite hard to see if there has been any rubbing wires, but it doesn't look like an area that should have any movement.

Does anyone know if this loom would have anything to do with the SRS?

Also how the hell do you get the lower part of the center console/dash out? haha.

Cheers,
Kristian

Had a look behind the centre console of our FL1, it seems that this relay operates the heater blower motor on position 4 (highest speed) you could confirm by matching the wiring colours with 'Rave'.
