I recall those Volvo bumpers, they were on polymer springs and went back about 6" absorbing the energy, unfortunatly they would pop back out without warning up to half hour later, one nearly broke my freinds leg after he rearened someone and was standing by the car.
If you look at fatal accident per 100,000km which is somewhere on the web Landrovers are quite low down. It probably has more to do with how they are driven and used than the design and also how other drivers react to them, I think just putting the spare on the bonnet is enough to give a lot of drivers second thoughts.
