Broken spring?

Was driving to pick my wee boy up and there was a massive bang!

Parked up and the lower end of the car is really low down

It's hard to tell if it's one particular side as I'm parked on a kind of angle, but the passenger side definitely looks lower than the drivers

Does that sound like a spring has gone??

How do I know if it is safe enough to drive to the garage?

(That's 3 months with nothing going wrong, so something was bound to!)
 
If there's nothing obviously catching anywhere, move it somewhere flat and level, you'll get a better idea then
Coil springs don't normally go bang. Normally it's the last coil that snaps

Oh great...

Been looking it up online and now worrying theres more sinister rust that has caused it!

Are you saying the springs themselves dont make a bang noise when they snap?
 
You didn't mention any rust. If a spring mount, or a shock mount has gone, particularly upper ones, that could go with a bang
No, you don't normally hear the tail snap off a coil

To be fair, it's a 16 year old td5, would I need to specifically mention it has rust!?

I have done a lot of Google searching and people seem to be saying the same thing... a loud bang and it was their coil that broke
 
If it's sounds from the rear? Take of the rear wheels?? And have a look! If you see anything take a pic of the area/problem-s upload to here! You receive a lot of help when ppl see what the prob is?? And the way to go??:rolleyes:
 
Well, turns out it was the airbag that literally blew up!!!!

The mechanic said he has never seen it actually explode to the extent mine had!!

Am I at this point better buying a spring conversion kit, if I don't use it off road?

Is this also why maybe a) my 3 amigos are on and b) when I park up I hear a continuous, 3 second repeating mechanical noise?

My poor car has trying to tell me for a while it had a problem?

If I get the rear spring conversion kit are there any sensors I need to buy too, or any other components?

Typical ive just binned a decent bag on Friday I held on to it for a while thinking someone will need it.
Then decided clear out time,I could have came & fitted it as im off takes about 15 mins.
Takes longer to jack it up & get the wheel off.
I always buy Dunlop bags & there are 2 sensors on the trailing arms 20 odd quid a pair which I normal
just change when doing the bags not necessary to replace them.

Keep the bags its a much nicer motor to drive with them, been there done that.;)

Just called up paddocks there and they advised me to go for 2 heavy duty coils and the conversion kit which is 130 quid all in, so not too bad

Mines is the 7 seater so they advised getting the heavier duty ones

Do sensors or anything need replaced too though?

This is definitely why my 3 amigos (actually 4) have been on I think

Just wonder it that mechanical noise when I parked up was the compressor struggling too

Looks right.
No need to do the sensors as they wont be doing anything also you will need to get it plugged in
to a naocom or similar to change the settings to tell the motor its no longer running on air.
You will have a light on the dash if you don't.
Not sure what the mechanical noise is youl need to take a recording of it.
 
IMHO, do NOT change it to coils - it will ruin it.

If you do, remember that you will no longer be insured unless you tell your insurers and get their agreement to the modification...... :rolleyes:

Is that something that any garage can do with a normal test computer?

Or need a nanocom specifically?

Take it until i do that it wont cause any problems, I will just continue to have my lights on the dash?
 
You'll regret it. A lot of us have tried it and ended up putting the bags back on.

There was a good reason why LR fitted them in the first place. :)
Maybe, but I dont do off roading and it's a 17 year old landrover with chassis rust

So dont fancy spending 700 quid on this!
