Broken Half shaft advice needed please

Hi,
A first post from a relatively new Series 3 owner.

As I went to pull away from a junction today I lost all drive at the rear. There was no loud bang as far as I can remember (but the radio was on pretty loud!)

I can get drive in 4wd with the yellow knob down-presumably from the front only so I suspect a broken half shaft at the rear. I am planning to drive the landrover 16 or so miles to the garage in the morning on the front wheels only...will/can this cause further damage to the diff? I wondered about removing the rear prop...would that be advisable....it's half nine at night and chilly but I'll do it if it might save the diff.

pull the shortest half shaft out and replace drive flange its easier than prop its usualy short one that snaps

I drove my landy with a broken rear half shaft for about 100 miles. Luckily the diff suffered no damage, but I had to strip it all out and clean out the swarf. It'll be worth taking out the broken shaft to reduce the amount of crud caused by the jagged ends rotating together. To stop the diff rotating completely you'll have to remove both half shafts and the prop

Thanks for your replies guys. In the end I decided to take the prop off this morning on the basis that no oil could leak out of the axle as might if the shafts were removed and I wasn't sure which one had broken anyway. Also I figured the garage would want the diff out to get the broken bit out possibly and so it would save them 4 bolts to un do.
Happily everything OK now...it was the longer one that had given up
