2005 Defender TD5

Engine just cut out, temperature gauge stopped reading (fuel gauge still reads) and fuel pump isn't running.
Turns over but won't start. Stuck at the side of the road!
Any ideas?
Hiya mate, only just seen this thread.
Fecking 4 hours and counting waiting for recovery, I feel your pain, pal.
Hope you get it sorted out and let us know what it was.
Best of luck mate!:(:(:(:(

RAC are calling out this morning, last night it was just a recovery truck, no attempt to diagnose the fault.

lf they can't sort it they are going to take it to the LR garage that l use.

From reading online during the long wait last night, l have a feeling that the ECU has died.
A few people have had the same set of symptoms and it was the ECU under the seat.

Sorry to hear about this. Never a good time but just before Christmas is worse. Let us know how you get on.

I feel for you having had the very same experience myself. It's not pleasant but that started the fing an ECU problems I encountered. I wish I had sent my ECU for repair and not purchased a new one.
I now have two the original repaired and the new one repaired (it didn't work out of the box but no other new ones available from anywhere. I think this is now rectified)

Just a thought, has your inertia switch tripped, it's in the circuit right before the power pins for the ECU and fuel pump

l did think of that, l assume if it tripped you press the top of it to reset it, l tried that and it didn't press in so assume it hadn't tripped.

l should have checked it for continuity but didn't do, will pass that on to the LR garage

So it needs a new engine management unit.

They tried one from another Defender and it started immediately.

Any ideas as to where l could get one quickly?
I can't really wait for mine to be sent away and repaired.

lt's a late Defender TD5
Part no. NNN50020

It will take too long.

The garage are massively busy (booked up until March) They've taken mine in for repair because l know them, but they really want it gone by weekend.

When my ECU packed up due to oil contamination I fixed it by flushing it out with spray brake cleaner and leaving it to drain/dry, I also swapped the loom connector out for the upgraded version to stop the oil tracking in. Solved the problem.

That’s assuming it’s oil contamination that has caused the issue, if it’s not then my suggestion is utterly useless…..

Looks like new ECUs are not available any longer. Unlikely anyone has one in stock as it's a high value item and would be drawn directly from LR.
So used or repair only two options, or maybe used and repair will give you a spare ECU for future failure!!!
I know you need your 110 for your business is a van hire an option to keep you running?
Get your 110 returned home, order a Nanocom, purchase a used ECU, set it up with the Nanocom and send your failed ECU for repair.
This little lot will be wallet bending I know but little else will give you the safeguarding you need to keep your 110 as your business vehicle and stop a similar situation in the future.

A good idea to keep a spare.

l assume the garage will code the injectors if they fit a replacement ECU

And if l send mine for repair it will come back with the codes still inside? l will do as you suggest, but l may as well let the garage fit a new ECU and get it running, they have lent me a car.

lf l keep the spare ECU (my original one, repaired) in the vehicle and it breaks down, can l just swap them
over or will it need some coding/setting up? The seller of used ECU's l've contacted says theirs are "plug and play" and don't need setting up with the alarm etc.

Reason l ask is l've looked online, and Nanocom's are really expensive so l wondered if l could get away without one.

Two companies come up as repairing TD5 ECU's

Alive, and Empire Tuning

l got through to Alive and the guy was really helpful, they may be able to repair it but need to see the unit, if it can't be repaired they can transfer the software over to a replacement and that costs £1,000
lf it can be repaired it's around £200

There's a company near me who sell replacement second hand TD5 ECU's for £700 and it might have to be that, to get the vehicle back on the road, and send mine to Alive to see if it can be repaired as a spare.

Does a 2005 Defender have a crankshaft position sensor (cpk)? Those are known to fail on Td5s and V8s. Symptoms are engine continuously cranks over, no revs showing on tach, and engine won't run.
