Brakes

Afternoon looking at the neighbours 2004 Hippo I decided to take it for a run and applied the handbrake.

Came back after filling up and saw the brake light on the dash was on. Got home filled it up with 250ml ish of brake fluid pumped the brakes , drove another few miles and light came on.

Filled another 250ml ish , lights of for now.

Have I done something wrong ?

Checked all pipes under tie bonnet , nothing leaking from there.

Any suggestions ?

Could be a dodgy switch, I think it's in the cap ...

Well I suppose it all depends on whether the fluid in the reservoir is going down or not.

If the fluid is going down, then there is a leak which will need to be found. My suggestion would be to start at the back and work forward. Starts at the very back as the cylinders in the rear brakes can leak. I'd have thought that it would be obvious where its coming from, but if the rear brakes have not been touched in a while, its a good thing to inspect them anyway as the pins holding the shoes on are known to corrode... dropping the shoes off the cylinders and they then pop out and spill fluid with immediate and disastrous effect!

If the fluid is not going down, then how empty was the reservoir? When was the last time they checked the brakes and fluid? If the fluid was low, wear on brake pads can lower the fluid level and throw the warning light. A 250ml top up would surely have resolved that though. Maybe it is a faulty hand brake or fluid level switch. If it keeps coming on, you can disconnect/jump the switch wires to see if 1 is faulty - ie the light stops coming on (but make sure fluid levels are good first!).

I also seem to remember that there is another reason (other than hand brake or fluid level) for that light to come on - there is such a thing as 4 Amigos. May be worth seeing what Rave says about the brake warning light.
