on the left wheel i have managed to change the shoes, springs and cylinders (s3 88" 1982) and just managed to get the drum to go over the new shoes but the hub wont sipn freely bacuse the shoesare touching the drum and the adjusters are set to the smallest setting, is this normal and do i just drive it until it turns freely?

on the drivers side im having difficulty getting the new shoes and springs on properly, i can get the springs on, but because of where the adjuster cams are, the shoes wont sit strait, how do i get around the problem of of the springs been in the way of the adjusters?, i can turn the adjuster so that the shoes basically line up with the cylinders but then there is no chance of adjustment, and the drum wont go over the top, any ideas and help much appriceated :)

Assuming you've got the brakes with the single cylinder at the top (if not ignore this)

Are they the right shoes? Are they a decent make? Some aftermarket shoes can be a notoriously bad fit.

LH side - is the piston pushed all the way in? Try releasing the bleed valve and pushing the pistons together. If that doesn't work try sanding some of the brake material away.

RH side - should be the opposite of the LH side. Upper spring goes from pin on backplate to pin on opposite shoe with the long straight section of the spring to the shoe pin. Straight bit of spring to the top, goes behind the adjuster cam and fits on the little ridge on the pin.

Both trailing shoes should be located by their anchor plates.

Its a 1982 so it's the one with the 2cylinders, all parts are genuine/Oem so they are of a good quality they seem to be the corret shoes, I looked in the parts catalouge and they are the right things, ill try slackening the bleed valves tomorrow, didn't think of that, and then I'll post back with how I'm doing :)

I've had exactly the same issues, quality shoes, but they're too big. I've taken to grinding the metal down a few mm where it fits into the cylinder to shorten them so that they'll fit. No ill effects.

I ended up chamfering the shoes a little to get them to fit...but first get a G-clamp and push the cylinder pistons home or you will be wasting your time. Don't unwind the adjesters all the way as they can push the shoes out a little when completely unwound.

Also, have you had the back plate off? If you have I'd double check that it has gone on straight. I had a bit of broken off lock tab stuck to the back of mine...lots of headscratching before I checked!

No I haven't taken the back plate off, I shall try a g clamp and punching the pistons in and reshaping the shoes :) thanks for the help

shouldnt need to clamp the pistons. youll end up coil bound'ing the spring in the cylinder.

we've got the issue at the moment with the arse end brakes on a early 90.
all shoes fit, but come to put the drum on and the front shoe, top edge is sitting too proud to get the drum home. both nearside and offside.
first set of shoes was allmakes, second set wasnt but cant remember at mo. neither fit,
currently it has the old shoes back on (cleaned up - oil contamination) till
we sort the issue out.
