Hello all, i am new to landyzone, but not new to landrovers.
However whilst working under a series 3 SWB the other day, i came across a brake type valve that was new to me. The valve was bolted to the rear floor, just in front of the rear axle. There was a cable running from the handbrake lever to the front of the valve, on the rear of the valve was a metal brake pipe. This brake pipe was tee 'd' into the main front to rear brake pipe, just forward of the flexi-hose. iIn the middle of this valve was two rubber hoses, slightly bigger than heater hose. Both of these hoses had been cut, so i was unable to follow them.
Now is your chance to impress me. What was this valve for.

May be a hydraulic handbrake to lock all four wheels, dont know about the rubber hoses though?.Had something similar on a mini I used to rally many years ago but only locked the rear wheels.

According to the factory specs 88" Petrol Series III Land-Rovers were good for towing a 4 ton trailer if it had coupled brakes. Could this valve be an actuator for air brakes on a trailer perhaps?

Did'nt minis have a simmilar looking/sounding thing?, a kind of pressure reducer in the rear brake lines, think it was to stop the rear wheels locking up under heavy braking, could be something like that?

i put a remote servo of a viva on my mini, under heavy braking all the wheel cylinders blew out the seals.was a bowel emptying moment when that happened.:D:D
