Brake Shield and MOT

The brake shields on mine are a right old jaggedy mess. It'll be going in for MOT in a week or so, so I'll report back on what the outcome is. Mind you, the last test at the same "strict" Council workshops I've used for years gave me a pass despite a significant hole in the rear subframe being present and fairly obvious.

2.12 Tyres and wheels
These will be inspected to check for:

condition
security
tyre size and type
tread depth
Spare wheels and tyres are not inspected.

Vehicles first used on or after 1 January 2012 will be checked to make sure the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) MIL is working.

Was that changed then?

Thats difficult.
We run summer tyres (without the TPMS sensors) and the fault message dosent come up till we have driven the car for about 10-15mins, not at start up.
TBH it dosent come up as a fault at startup just "not available" so it knows its working but just cant find the wheels 🤔.

So without a spare it’s a pass.
With an illegal spare it’s a fail.
Without a brake dust shield that is in danger of falling off it’s a pass, with it might be a fail 🤔.

Don’t even know why I am getting drawn into this it’s obvious to a blind man:vb-groan2::vb-groan2:

In the UK a car with an illegal spare tyre will pass the MOT, as the spare isn't part of the test. The only time a spare needs to be legal, is if it's actually needed to replace a damaged tyre, at which point it needs to be legal.

Brake backplates aren't part of the test either, and some high performance cars don't have them to aid brake cooling.
