Hi All,

I'm planning to change my brake pads in a couple of days and wondered if you lot had any advice for me. I've never changed them before but i am quite handy and i've watched quite a few tutorials online and it doesn't seem too difficult.

Has anyone had any problems when changing the pads? It's a 2004 TD4 if it makes any difference.

Would appreciate any top tips you guys might have.

Brake cleaner an 11 mm and a screw driver to wedge between the brake piston and rotor to release pressure. Caliber comes right off and brake pads pop of just popnnew ones in and refit back to rotor and put both bolts in. I didnt do the rear because they almost last forever.
 
Some pads have a taper to the braking material, just check they are fitted the correct way, unlike the dealer I bought my Freelander off. Anti seize grease ( copaslip ) between the pad and the piston should help to reduce brake squeal.
 
do not for get to take the top of the reservoir and put a piece of rag around it so to catch any overflow if any . also I am bewildered at these new pads with the corner cut off on which way round they go also are you not loosing braking power with these as apposed to the old ones with a full face pad?
 
Jack up safely and use an axel stand. Double check you tighten everything back up and you will be fine

From your advice and all the stuff I've seen online I'm pretty sure I've got it sussed. I'll be attempting it Tuesday morning so look out for a post from me if it doesn't go well and I'm stuck! :p

I've seen a couple of interesting tips about only needing to undo the bottom calliper bolt so it can flip up on itself (holding it up with cable ties etc.) and using a tube going into to an empty bottle to collect the excess fluid when pressing the piston back in, so hopefully they are good tips that work.

If anybody's interested...

... I did it! It was quick and easy and I'm really chuffed with myself! It took me a little over an hour to complete both sides and get the wheels back on.

Thanks for your advice and the advice of the 'youtubers' who uploaded the tutorials, they were a massive help!

Can't wait for the next job to present itself so I can get my hands dirty again!

lol I was waiting for someone to say that!

I did do another little job this afternoon. My spare wheel brake light housing was looking pretty rough and discoloured so I dismantled the whole lot and resprayed it, I was really pleased with the results. See picture attached:

+1. So far this year alone I have replaced/repaired the rear diff mounts, both rear window regulators, HDC switch on the gearstick, drivers door central locking solenoid and the ABS pump/modulator, I also do my own servicing. I am not a mechanic however, I bought a Haines manual, downloaded RAVE and have not been afraid to use this forum to search/ask for help and advice, without the help from the good folks on here I doubt that I would have even tried to do the jobs I've done.
