Is it a good idea to remove disc brake mud shields

Mine are all bent and worryingly close to rubbing on the disks. They also seem to have some special "breathing holes", but I'm not aware of them being available in vented variety ;)
 
Binned mine years ago.
Ive seen lots of issues on trucks caused by heat/dirt shields.
