Hey chaps my speedo bounes form 1-2mph to 25mph, after that it just moves about a tad, not a serious problem but it's bugging me, any ideas ?(it's a 1984 series 3 swb, all standard, as far as I know)
My dad says he thinks the cable has a kink in it somewhere, and I can't find any kinks ??

Ok cheers will look tonight, I have checked with a satnav and the speedo does seem reasonably accurate 30, anyway how hard is it to fit a new cable?

Not difficult but fiddly getting the screws out of the gearbox end. Be careful where you route the new cable as on SWB it always seems to want to find the exhaust and give it a cuddle

Even more of a bugger if you have an overdrive.

The drive is held in by three flat head set screws that often work loose. It the cable goes in at an an angle then it might not engage very well with the drive gear.

I think wonky speedos in Series motors are the norm from my experience, especially at low speed, somtimes the speedo heads just need refurbishing / recalibrating as they get old. worn spindles, demagetisation etc

Make sure the cable runs in a gentle curve to the speedo head don't make any sharp bends. It could be the inner core catching the casing. New cable only costs about £6.
Depends on how old the cable is there was one batch a couple of years ago which had dodgy ends which weren't square.
Dead right about the small screws on the box - can be difficult to work on

make sure that the cable is in the speedo and the gearbox propely, and not in more one end than the other,as the inner will move slightly, mine worked fine for a while, and then started jumping up and down, and then just died! been driving without one for months now, lol! :D

Also worth checking the rear output shaft nut is tight centre of handbrake drum under the propshaft as this affects the drive gear , just nipped between gear components I believe so if slack it can slip.
