Hello everybody,

I bought my first Land Rover. I'd been dreaming about owning a Defender since I was a child and now the dream is coming true. It's very old and out of shape at the moment, but I'm planning to give it a complete make-over.

Looking forward to connecting with other Landy-Lovers.

Doesn't look too bad in that pic, although I can't see the underside or bulkhead in the pic.
I would be wary of complete makeovers, can be very expensive. I would try running it for a bit, and just fix what you need to, get a realistic idea of what you have got. If they are well maintained, the major components can go on for a surprisingly long time.

Nah, it's not too bad really. The engine's absolutely fine, brakes need work.
It's really more of an optical make-over. It's got quite some dents and scratches. Looks like it's been driven in desert rallies or something like it. Also there are some changes that were done that need undoing. o_O
But for its age it's in decent shape actually. That's true.

Land Rovers usually have a few dents and scratches. Known as patina on the older ones.
I would ignore them, the body is alloy, so it doesn't rust, and a tatty appearance deters theft.
Bad modifications are also fairly common on these vehicles, I think you are right to return it to more or less standard if possible.

That's pretty much the plan. This car really always looks a lot better in photos (even in the pic below it looks kind of good, which was helpful for when I showed people which car I'd just bought, so I wouldn't have to have endless discussions about why I spent so much money on such an old car :cool: ). Once you see it from close by though, it looks quite rough; and not in a "this car has been used"-rough way but in a "this car needs a bit of help"-rough way. In short: It does need a bit of work, but not too much. Nothing crazy planned. :D

Ah! Wiring in random colours seems to a "favourite" :rolleyes: .... :confused: :mad:

Old cars are the simplest, and therefore, if looked after can provide very cheap reliable motoring IME.

How does insurance work in Germany? can you get agreed value for example, just in case ......;)
 
Welcome...looks good...wouldnt worry to much about exterior its the underneath that can run away with your money but Iv'e heard inspection is quite tough in Germany like here in Portugal...

Hahaha, if there's especially colourful wiring involved, we haven't discovered it yet. BUT there are some drain pipes built in...for better ventilation apparently. They absolutely have to go!
Had to google "agreed value". So no, don't think we have that here. :confused:
