Hi...
So I've bought a gearbox, how do I know it's ok to put straight in? I'm told it's a series 3. It's replacing a 2a box that is fitted to my supposed series 3 landy.
It had an overdrive fitted ( gone before I bought it) so I'm guessing it's missing some bits?
I'm also told it's good to go straight in, but how do I know for sure, what checks can I do, to be as certain as poss it's ok.
Don't want to completely strip it down and end up breaking a good box by my own stupidity.pics coming
Thanks

I presume that without the output gear I carnt select gears?
Just drained the gearbox oil, looked ok and no chunks of metal fell out. The transfer box was different.... Looked like black jam! The drain plug was very, very tight, I'm hoping that it stopped the previous owner changing the oil! I'll carry on cleaning it up and then see if I can find an inspection cover...

you can select them with engine off but running there would be no drive from t/box and shaft could move

There's no way of knowing for certain, all you can do is look in the top as Tottot has already said. You will have to take the top cover off; that's the one that covers the selector forks. It isn't that simple though because you can lose the detent balls in the box if you don't tackle it right. You will need to take the little covers off, extract the springs and stuff grease in the holes to capture the ball bearing and stop them falling in. There are three of them, one on each side and one on top. My advice: don't tackle it if you don't know what you are doing; at the very least, get a workshop manual and read up on the job.

Off to read up then I'm going in....

Cover me!!
Then I'll ask more questions. Oh here is one.
Just found this while tiding uo..any ideas?

Only way to know is look inside. And you are missing the output gear as well as the covers.
Is this the bits I'm missing? Will they be the same on my 2a box or are they specifically series 3 only. Without them I carnt move the box through the gears to test

45,46,47 plus pto cover assembly
So the other parts in the picture above are on the other side of the housing? I.e I carnt see them yet?
And so my missing cog goes against the high or low transfer gear wheel?
Sorry for all the questions!

yes you need the 3 bits i mentioned plus cover

if you struggle finding them give me a shout
I will thank you!
Was hoping to just swop them off my old box as I'm switching gearbox's didn't know I'd need them to check the box first and don't want to fit this new gearbox till I know it's ok. (Hope that makes sense!)

Ok just finishing cleaning box, ive noticed there is a lot of play up and down, and a bit in and out on the shaft where the clutch conects, I presume this in not normal?

theres some play as it can rock in the ball bearing and the roller bearing between it and the mainshaft
